Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

One could make the argument that counting only moving time largely eliminates variables like the timing of traffic lights, etc. I mean, sometimes you hit all the lights just right, and sometimes you hit them all wrong, and it's not fair to punish you for luck, right?

Even if you're "only" counting moving time, hitting lights/stops is a big detriment, rather than an advantage. Even on a relatively clean course in the city, my NP needs to be a good 20-30% higher to maintain a 20mph moving average vs a 20mph elapsed average on rural roads.

Hence, "largely".

There are two lights on my Sunday ride where the difference between hitting the light so I can roll through it versus missing it amounts to several minutes. EACH.

Meh, maybe it largely eliminates external factors for someone in a rural area or someone on the outskirts of a suburban area (or someone willing to drive to a ride), but it doesn't even come close to someone within a metro area, which is a big ol' chonk of the population.

I do consider myself blessed to live in the heart of a major metro area and yet I can put together rides of 50 miles or more with only a handful of traffic lights.

I see what you did there.

I skipped over the bifocal stage and went straight to progressives.

Yeah, I wish! I'm sure that the topography helps quite a bit - maybe less sprawl? I live towards the western edge of the metro area, defined loosely by the loop of the interstate bypass, but it still takes me more than an hour of riding until traffic controls are few and far between. Bam's neck of the woods is, comparatively speaking, wonderfully wide open... it's just too bad about the limited shoulders and occasionally homicidal drivers.

Turns out that riding yesterday was a damn good idea. Today, it's 100 all over. That's a bit higher than I'm accustomed to!

Although we are in a fairly congested area, I can actually do that with no lights. Stop signs and traffic circles are more the norm. There are some busy roads to cross though.
