1993 Cannondale R900 partial with oddities

This was an interesting find for me. I am not sure what to do with it...trying to figure out if I can use any of the parts other ways...Frame is in very good to excellent shape

...anyhow, it is the components that intrigued me...
Paul Powerglide RD,
Sampson crank I think with Shimano rings...I think.
Simplex RF shifters (not sure which).
White accented Superbe Pro FD...
Stronglight HS of some sort...
Roval tubular wheels...front missing one spoke. Not sure which ones.

Are Roval spokes difficult to source?

Paul RD and Roval hubs

Nice find! Those are Simplex SLJ rétro-friction shifters, probably the nicest friction shifters ever. Love the Rovals. Early aero stuff. Very cool. French, of course.

Not sure what to do with them...I don’t ride tubulars. Plus, how do I replace the spoke?

Were the Paul derailleurs originally intended for mountain bikes? Maybe their best use would be a touring bike?

Second question, am I right that these are Sampson cranks...I was thinking these were the Stratics, but don't have the markings I have seen in some...how were these cranks regarded? They seem to have a pretty standard bolt circle, so maybe can source some rings more appropriate?

I think the Roval wheels will need to find a new home...

What a cool find and the Paul RD is a rare treasure. I have '93 R600 and believe the ride is the fastest of all my bikes. Looking forward to how you plan to restore and build it out.

Yup. Everything else on the bike…including the bike…is meh comparatively. The Paul rear derailer never was a great derailer but it has a following. Although the Paul isn’t a NOS Rasta which can sell for over $1000 on Fleabay, it’s still valuable enough that it could fetch half to 3/4 of that price.

😲

I thought maybe the Roval wheels were somewhat interesting...not sure what the freewheel is.

Not sure what I want to do...I already have a Crest Cannondale. It was one of those moments where I couldn’t pass it up for the other parts.

i am wondering about the white highlighted Superbe Pro FD.

The Sampson crank will be polished and then I can probably get use out of it somewhere.

I am likely going to offer up the Tubulars to someone who will enjoy them. I have a set of Campy tubs with Campy hubs saved for a future foray...

Pales in comparison. Everything…and I mean everything…on the bike is Swarovski crystals in comparison to the diamond that is that Paul derailer. If only you had the matching front.

Nice MAVIC skewers on those Rovals too .
Was there a connection between Roval and MAVIC?

Look to be alloy nuts instead of usual heavier steel? chromed ones.

There is some info in the thread below, which suggests a connection to Maillard, rather than Mavic:

That’s what I’ve read as well...the Mavic skewers seem to be afterthoughts.

on another note, the Syncros bolts seem to be quite pricey as well... 😮

They are alloy. But with a steel lever and bolt to hold it on. The end but and the lever structure are lovely bits of oxidized aluminium!

Will try to shine them up.

Cool chain, looks like its gone too long without lube, reminds me of boiling MC chains in grease back when we couldn't afford to pay attention.

I WILL be trying to resurrect that guy. Measures out at minimal stretch (based on my measurement of course which is prone to error)

I will be evaporust-ing it...not sure what I may do with the pair though...

which seems to be the case with the entire set bike set of parts...use or find a good home for.

I will be evaporust-ing it...not sure what I may do with the pair though...

which seems to be the case with the entire set bike set of parts...use or find a good home for.
And its going to be tight from the rust so....

Doesn't matter that much unless it actually comes out usable, as long as it cleans up ok, it can be used for display at the very least since its cool as you know what.

I did an experiment the other day where I soaked down one of a pair of rusty pedal bodies with PB overnight and just dumped the other one in the evaporust then cleaned the PB one and dumped it in too. After another overnight soak, PB one was twice as derusted as the other and much easier to get the last of it off with a brass brush, Turtle wax chrome polish/rust remover and elbow grease.

Should have documented it but wasn't sure how it was going to go.

PB-evaporust combo...hmm.

My favorite odd use was soaking a freewheel in filthy evaporust bearings and all. Then the whole thing in somewhat dirty WD40 and wire brushed. Then in Dawn water. Rinsed and put in evaporust again.

It was astounding. The BEARINGs after some oil were smooth as silk. That’s what surprised me. The cogs did what they do in ER...they go full black if not chromed types.

Hopefully Pastor Bob doesn’t read this...

I brake cleaned the PB off before the evapo and I kind of think if the evapo has to do less work then marginal chrome turns out better. these were pretty rusty Lyotard Berthet's that are pretty cool.

I'll get an after pic later.

agreed about not making ER work too hard.. that’s why I have the nearly defunct stuff as the pre deruster...stretches the newer ER for more uses and is easier to strain.

Will definitely want to see the pedals!
