NOS/NIB Stronglight A9 Needle Bearing Headset

For sale is a NOS/NIB Stronglight A9 alloy headset with needle bearings circa 1995 (that's what the receipt says, at least). For our traditional bikes with 1" threaded steerer tubes and ISO threading.

Knowing the stack height would help it move along, not that it's needed. Those are relatively shallow for those who needed IIRC.

Great seller BTW

Well it looks like we both missed out on this one Bikemig. Josh just told me there was a buyer before I sent my "I'll take it" message.....

My commiserations. Perhaps we both were saved from buying something we wanted but didn't need?

I picked some A9 bearings for my Mooney's HS. Current bearings have 25,000 miles should be dying tomorrow. Ride like brand new but I think they do that expiration date thing and overnight turn to dust so I'm taking precautions. (On my headstone "He tried to outlive his A9".)

I'm still waiting to find out what the lifetime of my Stronglight Delta headsets are. These are basically the same as the A9, but with some o-ring seals.
One bike has over 60,000 miles, and the other only has about 55,000 miles.
I wonder what they look like when they are almost worn out?

This is from the recent overhaul of the bike with 60k miles...

Way back in 1986 I decided to try an experiment with a Stronglight A9 headset. I installed one on my commuter bike and rode it in all kinds of conditions for 20 years, with zero maintenance. In 2006 I opened it up to check how it had held up. Other than some discoloration on the lower races, it was fine. I swapped upper and lower races, repacked, and intend to check again in 2026 (although my retirement means it hasn't seen as much use since 2016). I also have a Delta headset I installed on our tandem in 1985. I haven't serviced that one at all since I installed it, but the tandem hasn't seen as much use as my other bikes.

I worked in a bike shop in New Orleans in the 80s. New Orleans is famous for its food and music. A little known fact about the city is that it may be the best testing grounds in the USA for headsets. The city is built on mud and consequently the roads have world class bumps and pot holes. We saw all kinds of headsets get damaged by those roads at the bike shop but not the Stronglight A9s.
