1960s-70s Raleigh 5-Speed (S5) Sprite
Late 1960s-early 70s Raleigh Sprite 5-speed - 23 inch frame on 26 x 1 3/8 wheels. Great for a rider 5 ft 6in or taller. Has the sought-after S5 Sturmey internal gear hub (1967 date) with correct bell crank. Highly original bike with great original paint condition. This is what Raleigh Bronze Green ought to look like, even after almost-50 years. Original rear reflector, new-old-stock German pedals from the 1960s. Chrome is in great shape as well. Original hubs, Westrick rims, and spokes. Original Brooks B72 is in good shape and rideable. Has Sturmey dual-stick shifter, new shifter and brake cables in the original housings, new tires, new tubes, Dare handgrips. Bearings have been cleaned and re-greased. Rear hub has fresh grease seals and new 20-weight oil in the center. Original brake pad holders with new Kool Stop pads set in them. Original Pretube Minor rear rack in good shape. Previous owner over-tightened kickstand and flattened the chainstays, but it has the proper kickstand now and works fine. This is the best tall frame Sprite I've ever come across; been riding it for about 3 years now and need to make space. If you like the deluxe Raleigh Superbe but want something faster, this is it.
$300 firm price - local pick up in the Kingstowne/Alexandria/Springfield Virginia area.

Lovely bike! Much nicer than the 1973 Spite 10 speed that I am currently working on.

edit: I'm 5'6" and a 23" bike, as measured by Raleigh, is way too big for me. I'd say an average of 5'10" or more. Maybe a little shorter if, like me, someone grew up riding bikes way too big.

Depends on build. I'm 5'7" and it's been a great bike for me. I ride it with the seat in the position seen in the photos.
This is the nicest Sprite I've seen. The paint hasn't faded as bronze green sometimes does.

My preference is to have a little more seat post exposed than what you show and I am not long legged, being a descendent of short legged German and Swedish farmers and factory workers. They didn't entice my ancestors to come to the US because they could ride big bicycles.
My preference in size is pretty much the size that is the Sports 21" -- about 54 cm ctt. Those who know how to size bicycles tell me that a horizontal top tube bike measured at 54 cm is way too big for me, that I require a 51 or 52 cm bike. I guess it's a legacy of being a kid in the 50s and 60s when bikes were either 24" or 26" and if you could reach the pedals on a 26" with the saddle (called a seat back then) all the way down you were big enough for a 26" bike -- and for more than a couple years. I rode my bikes a lot when I was a kid (I was a paperboy from 12 to 16) and I got used to, probably, more than normal leg extension. Still works.

I can ship the bike in the lower 48 states by ground as well (Bike Flights). Actual shipping price would be on top of the $300 base price. I don't charge for handling or box/materials - just shipping.

The drive-side stick controls the clutch, the non-drive side controls the sun gear selector rod. The sun gear controls the "widest" gears - Bottom gear and Top Gear. The clutch controls the "middle" gears - Low, Medium and High. The S5 has a very wide ratio, much wider than even the three speed AW. It gives you ranges that approach those of a 10-speed, though with fewer gears. It's great if you like a Raleigh Sports-style bike, but you have a hilly area and find the AW three speed to not give enough range. More info at:

Right. It's like a six speed, but middle gear is the same in both ranges.
