any reason not to buy garmin from uk?
I'm looking to pick up a Garmin 520.
Is there any particular reason why I shouldn't, as a USA user, buy it from a UK online vendor (such as Ribble), versus a US one (such as Excel Sports)?

If you're OK with a colour display instead of a color display then go for it.
I bought an Edge 25 from Evans a couple of months ago for $120. It works just fine with our American electricity and whatnot.

OP raises a valid question.
I heard that the UK versions come pre-loaded with maps of Europe and that US maps have to be loaded. True?
If so then how difficult is that to do?

I don't mind reloading (or adding) us maps if need be.
I'm more wondering what happens when I (evenually) have to call garmin because the damn thing crashed (like every garmin device eventually does).
Anyhow, we will find out. I ordered from Ribble. No U.S. seller was even in the same sport, let alone ball park.

The 520 doesn't really support maps. It does, but it doesn't. I have an 800 so I don't really know the details, just that its mapping is very limited, not only in the sense that you can't have a large area, but also in the way the unit can deal with the maps. So I doubt any 520 comes with maps pre-loaded.
But it's pretty easy to load free Open Street Maps onto an Edge, and in my experience these are better than the ones Garmin sells. Here are instructions: https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2013/05/d...705800810.html

I bought mine from Evans in the UK, and I had the situation described happen to me. I registered it online when I got it, then 3 months later a pin broke in the USB port. I called Garmin, they issued an RMA, then shipped a refurbished unit once they received mine. No problems with the fact that it was purchased from a UK supplier.
Oh, and the maps, such as they are, were fine when I got it. I did, however, reload it with opensource maps pretty quickly so that I could have better detail.

Thanks for the maps info. I have never used the maps on my 705, and have a phone in my pocket for if I happen to get lost... So any map stuff that happens to work is just a bonus to me.

Load maps for where you plan to ride onto the Garmin anyway. They'll be handy if your phone battery dies, or you want to check something quickly without getting it out of your pocket. Or if you ever ride outside of a coverage area but I'm guessing that isn't an issue out there.

Point. I'll load the open street maps when I get it.
Now.... off to find an ANT+ dongle so I can update the firmware on my "first gen" Quarq for the first time in well over 6 years.
It's so first gen, it has the serial number written on it with a paint pen. And that's the second one... they warrantied the first one for reading out of spec.

I noticed that PBK had the bundle listed for $399 - when I switched the currency to GBP, it comes up to £220. Current conversion rate makes that around $278 shipped. That's slightly cheaper than Evans or Ribble.
