It's hard to date old Peugeots, that's for sure. The best way to get a rough date is usually to check the date stamps on the derailleurs and hubs. Did you look there?

I can't beat rsbob's story (and bob, ow! Heal quickly) but i had decades of knee issues because my saddle was a quarter inch too high. Even an eighth of an inch probably would have resolved it.
