Restoring and riding an old Shogun 10 speed

Looking to aquire a road bike for some bikepacking in Maine. As I was cleaning up a pile of bike junk (friends drop off scrap iron when I'm not looking) I found an old Shogun 10 speed, minus a front wheel, functional rear tire and seat covering.

It all works, cables, brakes, shifters, but needs TLC...I'd like to try it out before moving up into the upper world of road biking. Since light knee surgeries, my orthopedic guy says biking yes. Ice climbing, heavy backpacking, mountaineerng....not so much.

Shogun 10 speed
Shimano gear
"Tangaloy" tags all over
"100" on the frame
Rear wheel 25.0" o.d. of rim...skinny road tire is unreadable...WHAT SIZE are we dealing with here...I have a KONA Blast now, and a FUJI Sunfire.

So looking to plunk a suitable wheel on the front, a tire on the rear and a seat.
Any guidance on finding these parts and other advice o this bike. Could be workable...maybe a waste of time if i really want to do road/gravel biking?

What markings are on the existing wheel? For example it was common in that era to have wheels labeled 27x1-1/4. If it does, then the wheel is a 27" size, with a diameter of 630mm. It could also be a 700c rim, which has a diameter of 622 mm. They are not interchangeable. If you can't see any markings, take the wheel to a shop so they can measure it.

To expand on what was posted above, the 630 mm and 622 mm are the diameters as measured from the bead, not to the outside edge of the rim. The 27 inch designation comes from the overall diameter of the tire. I measured one of my 27 inch rims and it was slightly less than 25 inches, edge to edge, so your wheel is probably a 27 inch/630 mm. I would still take it to a shop to confirm.

Here is a link for a complete explanation: https://www.sheldonbrown.com/tire-sizing.html

That clears it up, and appeals to my engineering/ machine design sensibilities. I always considered a bicycle a high level technological invention.

Any specs on this 10 speed Shogun? It feels heavier than my Kona Blast.....steel tubes? How do I determine model? Decals? Serial number stamped on the bottom bracket?

Got another Shogun

As i was pondering the use of the Shogun (black one) my friend offered me another one. (red one) It has straight handlebars, not the racing ones....700-25c wheels, and ready to go. Good frame size.

Then a drunk backed over the bike and bent the front wheel...began looking for another 700-25c front wheel.

A friend gave me a Cannondale road bike with 700-23c wheels which i immediately crashed on my alpine gravel driveway because the tires are just too thin. I plan to mount the 25c tire on the 23c rim, and get the red Shogun on the road. I didn't have trouble with the 25c's here on the farm, but the Shogun has rather tall gearing and not great for cruising the woods roads and the general farm terrain here.

I guess that's why one needs several bikes, eh?

Fried gave me another Shogun, and same day someone, a drunk at a party, backed over the front wheel and killed it.

So, then a frine gave me a Cannondale, with the 700c rims, and I mounted the Shogun 38c's on the 23c Cannondale rim and isntalled it on the Sogun #2. Great bike, but a bit too stee[ for the terrain around here...

What front sprocket options do I have? A Sugino sfront rig...can i get a smaller sprocket set?

Is it a double or triple crank?

I brought a bunch of old frames plus what was left of the Cannondale road bike to my friend at Augusta City Cycle.

He is ordering a 110 mm front chainring...hoping to get some lower ratis for around on the farm...a 34T. It is a double sprocket front....a 10-speed

Quick change to the smaller sprocket to 34t makes a great difference. Ihave the low end i need and maintained the road ratios.
