FWIW, I feel like it's not terribly easy to get good FTP figures outdoors. Around here, at least. There's always someone or something breakin' my stride and then there's enough variability in incline that it takes a lot more fussing to stay on target. This is my excuse for assuming that any FTP figures derived outside are underestimating my potential.
Yes, that's what it is.
I find outdoor efforts much easier than indoor. I think it's mainly the richer sensory feedback. Descents are obviously an issue, but I can avoid the big ones and bring up the mean power by pushing it on the uphills. I'm sure purists would be aghast, but it has real-world validity.
