So my sister got married in the mid 1980's. My parents offered her a big blowout wedding OR a modest wedding and a down payment on a house.
She got the big blowout wedding. It was your typical over-the-top NY Jewish wedding and I am sure it cost >100K in today's dollars. I don't approve but not my choice.

Kudos. I hope my kids do this.
We actually had a real wedding but did not want our meddlesome parents involved other than attending, so we self-funded it and only splurged on the venue and the caterer. We asked our friends to take pics and check the box for 2 sets of pictures (remember those days?) so no photographer. I took my stereo and had a friend make a party tape (remember those?) so no need to pay for entertainment. We kept the guest list very tight (about 54 attendees which pissed off my parents but tougho lucko), and the whole price tag in 1991 dollars was about $3500.
Most of the people said it was one of the best weddings they ever attended.

My daughter always wanted a nice wedding, and we did that for her, although we watched our budget pretty closely. It was right on the heels of Covid which got us some nice discounts. We got a 12-piece band for half their normal fee which was not much more than a DJ. While we tried to keep it reasonable, the cost still came to close to a 4-year college education at a state university. YOLO!

My wife and I had a big wedding that was pushed by her mom. We had some, but not much, say in what it would be.

I plan on giving my kids about 13k per year each for college. Thats as much as I pay in support per year today per kid. Anything beyond that their mom will have to figure out. They should also pay for some of it themselves or they won’t value it.
I also have no problem letting them know when they’re adults that their mom got paid 370k in support from the time we split to the time they graduated high school. I offered when divorcing to put half of the support in a 529 and she would not agree to it.

Scotch - we like islay/lowland. Lagavulin, Laphroaig, Ardbeg. I want it to smell and taste like swamp. Been into Mezcal for that reason too, smoky/savory/meaty. Bourbon is a bit sweet for me when neat, but I do love a bourbon based cocktail, manhattan, paper plane, boulevardier etc. +1 on the Woodford.
Spirit consumption has gone way down since baby came around. Even before then, I usually just prefer a glass of red most of the time. My favorite wines are made from Syrah (Crozes, Cote Rotie) and Sangiovese (Brunello, Chianti).

no - for sure not a waste of money - can be a great investment
but its a big chunk of change - and then lather/rinse/repeat the next year … and the next year … and …
we were fortunate our kids had generous scholarships - but that’s not often the case … and regardless it’s still $$$

Feel for you in your situation. If I were in your shoes, I most likely would have done things differently than I did.

I have that much most nights of the week, usually in the form of wine with dinner. Never any more if I want to do anything meaningful on the bike the next day, which is most of the time really. A couple glasses of red seems to be as much as I can have without any noticeable hangover, and still have drive to push on the bike the next day. Or it's just a baseline, hard to tell.

We are fans of requiring the kids to have skin in the game. We paid for their undergrad, but required them to pay their own grad school (which was required for their career choices). Daughter first complained about having a student loan for that, but she quickly got over it.

Mass Start Neokyo Crit race ~10mi, 11th / 91.
Had planned on going easy after the hard weekend rides, but my legs and mind felt ok during my vibe check warmup, so I lined up. It took forever to load and I was actually 5s late so I had to attack to the front, dangit. A couple minutes in, 5 or so went up the road and everyone looked at each other. I wasn't / haven't been feeling confident in myself so I sat in and it became very clear we were racing or 6th.
After ~10 min of that I got pissed at seeing my AP so low and so much blue and green, so I attacked and drew out a few more. It was a nice hard push to the line and we were never more than 9s up. Sat up at the sprint and got passed by a couple, could have squeezed a bit to hold on to 8th, whatever.
Capped off the ride w another 10 min with the A bot. I was the only one there!
enough is enough - time to go!
bye bye A bot
