Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Finally off the antibiotics for this bout of cellulitis. PCP wants me to get my leg veins ultrasounded or some such, check for venous insufficiency or DVT. Great.

I've been riding on Zwift, because of the increased sun sensitivity, but today I'mma ride IRL again. Last night's ride was a bit daunting. The route I rode has a 2-4 minute climb (depending), a 0.2 mile sprint, and then a ~10 minute climb. I went hard on the first and second, and then felt totally fried, so I rode to the base of the final climb and stopped. I felt tired and empty after. I think I underfueled for the effort. I didn't eat anything after lunch at 12:30, and then I rode at 6:30. I felt that way until I ate dinner at around 8:30. After that, I felt better.

I think I'm a dumbass.

You'll appreciate that my wife's birthday gift is a watch. A good, ole analog thing with moving hands and numbers stuck onto the dial.

Then there are those of us so late to adopt that we're riding forty and fifty year old technology.

Counterintuitively I lose weight when I'm not exercising enough.

Ebikes with 50 lbs of lead-acid batteries and an electric motor from a blender?

Most of who? I'm in the low-180s. When I was young, lean, and fast, I was in the low-160s. That was 20-ish years ago. Not much chance of getting that lean at this point in my life.

I'm down to 6'3 and 202 lbs, borderline overweight on the BMI scale.

I bet you could if you got the right disease.

5'9" and 145 lbs. Or at least that's my target race weight and what I keep static in Zwift (shhhhh). Truth is I'm pretty much always in the 145 to 150 range, so usually 2-3 lbs more. FTP around 4.5 w/kg when I'm good. But my real strength is repeatability and recovery in over/under efforts

One of the guys I used to ride dirt bikes with was like that. He was about 135 pounds and pretty fit but lost weight during inactivity. Told me once he didn't like eating, just too much trouble.
He got married young and his wife prepared all of his meals every day. When she left he said he didn't even know how to make a sandwich. I lived in his guest house for 9 years. He would go to dinner with the group after a ride day but I think he could take it or leave it.

I'm struggling to keep my weight over 150 right now and it was in the 140s for the past few summers. As soon as the weather gets less tempting, I'll go back to two days a week in the weight room and get back to 155 or so. Being under-muscled is a very unhealthy thing when you're old.

I was 220 at the start of a long tour in 1990. Came home 210 after 6 weeks on the bike which finished with a bout with Giardia. Took a month to get done with that parasite.

Low 170s, normally. Down to 5'11". Borderline overweight, officially.
