Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

That’s a pretty nice bike for the price. I’m really interested in Allied, they bought all of Guru’s stuff

He wouldn't care about the cat. Its the discharge of a firearm in the city limits that would get me in trouble. I get that.

Guy is pretty cool. He told me I could have some time in the department's training simulator if I want to try it out.

Discharge of a firearm here would bring the very firmament down upon my head.

I do not recall it, but I would be down for an Addiction Spring TT. I'll get killed by those with big motors and slippery bikes, but it would be some solid Type II fun.

Edit: plus, it would give me something to focus on this winter besides seeing how fat I can get.

At the start of the year students had the option of being on-line or in-person. About 1/3 were virtual. Over time individual schools closed as they had teacher shortages or whatever. But apparently the system has reached the breaking point now.

Our local club hosts a weekly 10 mile TT. Low traffic, all right turns, fairly flat. I've been using the single speed for it, most recently.

OCC Tuesday Nite TT | Ride | Strava

I need to take the Allez this spring. Haven't done that course with the 50mm wheels yet.

So, my wife's friend's hubby (the one that dodged my ride invites for years and aired some odd notions on training and racing) has solicited my advice on a bike re-build. I'm really having a hard time knowing what to say and how to say it.

Basically, he got his first proper road bike a year and a half ago, or so, a 105 CAAD. He decided to go rim brakes because he thinks that weight is paramount to performance and that discs would only be a weight penalty and wouldn't benefit him at all (remember that this is the guy that thinks a big factor in getting spit out the back of his only cat5 race because his competitors had nicer race rigs than him).

Now he wants to upgrade "for more performance," and he wants to stick with rim brakes so that he can carry over some of his components (105 and some middling wheels) and get the most BftB. He wants an Emonda SLR because it's very light and one of the few high-end framesets available in a rim brake configuration these days. In the end, he's looking at $4k out of pocket which would get him a ~16lb bike with a mix of 105/Ultegra (which he could later upgrade to DA "for more performance"). He's noted that there's a vacuum of rim brake framesets yet this apparently hasn't resulted in a lightbulb moment for him.

Oh, and he wants to upgrade to carbon wheels sooner rather than later and he's a flatlander that recently moved to the Appalachian foothills and probably has zero descending skillz.

This is all madness, to me.

If he is willing to spend 4k why not just buy the emonda outright save the parts for spares.

In the metro, we've been virtual since Spring break or so. From the start of this school year, we've been distance with an plan on three phases on the road back to full time, in-person. The district was close to moving to the phase with limited in-person, one-on-one with struggling students, but that got pushed back with the recent covid bloom.

No rim brake builds available - frameset only - and discs would just be too heavy.

I'd rather do 20 miles, but could be convinced to do 10. I feel like it should be an out and back or a loop, though.
