Small talk isn't big - they're not like most Americans that feel that silence is awkward and should be filled with small talk. It may take a while for them to open up about themselves - they can be very private - so don't "pry" about personal stuff, but follow up on what's offered - think long-game. Maybe talk about the outdoors and whatnot - your aversion to the cold and their typical mentality of "there is no bad weather, only bad clothing" could make for an interesting ice-breaker (ha ha).

We had some rain yesterday that transitioned in to sleet and snow, so it's a little crusty and slick out there. If I had my second studded tire on hand, I'd be tempted to install 'em and give 'em a spin. Maybe I'll see if I can swing by the LBS later to pick one up.
