Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

nice house. Plastic car, plastic house. This means you need a plastic bike for the trifecta.

Pretty much the same here. In much later phases (late 80s) they built some more colonial style houses but the earlier houses are almost 100% contemporaries

Sounds like a really good development. That was also before construction quality took a nosedive. Our extension is of that era and it's all steel studs, heavy drywall, and silent floors.

I have the day off today in observance of Good Friday. Mrs. DougRNS is in LesterOfPuppets neck of the woods in Sun City West so I'm all alone except for my little buddy Roscoe. I've got to cut the lawns, spray weed killer on my hill and get an oil change for the car. That's a tall order given my condition but I'm going to go easy and see if I can get some of it done. It's a long weekend. **** yardwork.

Off the dog drugs, and breathing is almost there. I was able to pop off 8x2' 125% on Weds. The first one sucked a lot, and then after that, the body resigned itself to the fact that the ******* riding the bike wasn't going to stop.

Last night, 7x3' 110%. Same same. That jerk in the not bike shorts isn't going to stop-May as well figure out how to get some air.

Sounds hard.

Started doing 3/3s at 115% yesterday, had to dial it down and didn't even get through the fifth one at 110%. I did 6 at 115% last week. I blame it on the squats and going back to the trainer after several rambunctious days on the road. Felt terrible.

It is. There is a good mix of original owners (from 70's), long-termers (we are now at 20 years), and newcomers with young kids. It's been a great place to live and raise a family.

Bonus: no HOA!

Yes. As you well know, weights hurt the bike and the bike hurts the weights. As John says, when it's weight time, kill the weights and get through the bike as best you can. We actually had me back on weights during my down time, simply because shutting down wasn't an option. Becoming detrained is real, even though previous work is still in the bank. Of course, the trainer adds another dimension. The watts are always hard fought, but for me, the trainer will always be tougher. Micro-rests are real and a fan blowing on me and my face, isn't outside, no matter what I have on the TV.

3x3' at 115% is hard. Don't kid yourself that it's not. 3x3' at 110% is also hard, just not as hard as 115%. Preaching to the choir, but it's amazing what an extra 5% can do to you.

We have an HOA, but it’s $180 a year and mostly just for trail maintenance.

Thanks for that. I could be underestimating my FTP, but the 3, 20, and 60 min trainer numbers pretty much agree. I just kept dialing it up as I got fitter over the winder, but maybe I should back off. Mostly theoretical now, since I'll be getting my VO2max thrashing at the hands of the local knuckleheads on weekday mornings soon. As for the weights, I seem to come back by the next weekend if I do the session on Sunday or Monday. Aside from the feeling in the legs, it's amazing what it does to me in terms of sleep requirement and morning HRV numbers. It's a real stressor, at least in combination with all the other stuff and at age Medicare-1.

Definitely a Z2 and Netflix day today.

OK so you own your land and can plant an apple tree in the backyard if you want?

The big McMansion neighborhoods all around us have HOAs and the rules are pretty strict, you can't plant a garden or trees even if you want to. Sad.

Yah, we aren’t limited except for a few things like no chain link fence and the colors for houses have to be of a certain pallet. Oh, and we can’t have livestock.

One of the things that keeps me in our current house is that the build is pretty high quality. We haven't experienced any foundation movement issues that are common in this area, and the house was built with a lot of nice trim and finishes. Everything is really solid.

We have a HOA. Dues are about $600/year and are used to keep up the common areas at the entries to the subdivision. There are restrictions on what you can do, but they only apply to getting approval for builds and the like. No sheds, but all houses have iron fences. I would not like looking at a shed anyway. I can plant whatever plants I want. HOAs don't have to be overly zealous, and restrictions typically benefit everyone equally.

Lotus with 0% of her toys, even though these seem to be her favorites, ranking just above bugs she finds floundering in the dog pool.

I imagine there are pros/cons.

We have a shed. We could even put up an old VW on cinder blocks in our yard if we wanted to.

Maybe I will do that with the Saturn when it dies.

Happy travels.

I'll be zipping past the broad vicinity of phrantic09 country on Sunday, and passing directly through rjones28 country an hour or so later.

Between having the old, perished insulation (an rat droppings, ew.) removed, and having new insulation blown in, we had an electrician poke around in our attic crawlspace. He apparently told Mrs. GeneJockey our house is 'very well built'. I asked whether it was really OUR attic he was in.

We live in a development built just after the war, typical California postwar ranch house. When we moved in, it had thick carpeting all over. Then the cats we had started a pee battle. After months of desperately trying to wash the smell out of carpets and pads - which doesn't work - Mrs. GeneJockey had had enough. The cats had chosen the foyer as their spot. She pulled up the carpet there. Turns out the place has oak floors through out.
