Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Wow. I'm having a hard time envisioning MUP conditions where that'd be appropriate. We have some paths that run 150+ miles from the Twin Cities to Duluth. Even those paths run through small towns/communities every 5 miles or so, though, and have enough traffic that a paceline wouldn't make sense. In the cities, we do have some areas with three separated paths - one for peds and one for each direction of bike travel. If there was really light traffic, maybe I could see it under those conditions, but why would you even build that kind of infrastructure unless there was enough use/traffic to warrant it?

Yeah, we had 3 mechanicals, so there was a lot of palavering too.

My ride was one guy and a bunch of ice. Low COVID risk, moderate fall-down-go-boom risk.

Everyone coming is quarantining for 2 weeks prior. It’s a condition of being allowed to come. My mother is coming from SC and has to have a negative test before coming here and then another test 4 days after getting here and attest to it in a traveler form. My in-laws are coming from CT.

Actually, my ride was probably 90%+ ice-free, but what ice coverage there was would have been major trouble on the slick and skinnies. Early on, I barely had the confidence to go at a pace that would put me higher than ~105bpm; eventually, I got in to the 130s.

Riding those tires on ice was what I'd imagine dating would be like after having an SO cheat on you - you want to trust, but it's gonna take some time. Also, as roadie, it's discomforting to feel the regular squirm from loose stuff and ice ruts - I can see the appeal of fatties with tires that roll over as opposed to seeking a path through. It was fine and even fun after a while though - squirm was a good reminder to lighten up the weight on the bars and to, uh, hold on loosely, but don't let go.

I was glad I am too fat for this any sport at the beginning of my ride today, I would have blown away in the wind if I was anywhere near “regular” weight for this sport.

I went a couple years ago with season pass holders so it was free. Also, it was after school had resumed, so there wasn't lines. I hadn't ridden on a ride in ages, so there was that.

I rode on a couple of MUPs as part of my ride today to shelter from the wind, saw approximately 5 people total

As usual, Yurrup's got you covered. Start like those "house divided" jerseys but quarter it instead.

Good luck trying to do a double line here. LOL

I need some brake pads. Went on ScamBay on 11/8 and bought 2 pair from a seller I used before with high feedback score and did not pay attention to location. After purchase I saw item coming from China. Not a huge deal but one pad is really worn so I went ahead and bought one pair from a domestic seller on 11/9 (next day).

Interestingly, the set from China is already in Wilmington Delaware, while domestic pair are in Hockessin, Delaware. It would be funny if China shipment beats USA.

That actually sounds like it could get to be major fun as the skills develop...for people with young bones.

Today’s ride had a few sections that were very steep. Like stand up in my 34/28 bailout gear and if not pushing hard enough fall over steep. I can’t verify but a fellow rider said it was 21%. Plenty steep for this guy.

That's kind of what I'm thinking. Also, I think that some of that different skill set will translate to the road and be helpful.

But yeah, I don't exactly want to fall either, but slower speeds and more padding make me feel a little better about it.

I think if I were going to ride on snow and ice I'd go the fat bike route.

Fat chance of that happening though.

You know, there are bikes made for drop bars with big tires if you didn't want to go the flat-bar route

Joe and Jill mask up for their MUP assaults. Looks like Jill rolls sans water a la Velo Vol but Joe seems to have a small SmartWater /PnR
