Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Oh, yeah! Another thing that made yesterday's ride so great? I managed to perfectly bunnyhop both expansion joints on the bridge over the dam. First time! Usually I blow one or the other, or both, but this is the FIRST TIME I nailed both ends of the bridge!

Woulda been a perfect ride if it weren't for that rock in the bike lane, concealed by the dappled sunlight coming through the leaves...

Crystal Springs Dam in San Mateo County.

It was built in the late 19th Century, but it's pretty solid. They did some structural upgrades to the dam, so they demolished the bridge that spanned it back in 2011. They promised it would reopen in 2013. It FINALLY reopened in January 2019.

When the new bridge was opened, it had big expansion joints at both ends that are maybe an inch tall by maybe a foot wide. There's almost no ramp on them, so they're pretty jarring to hit at 30+ mph. Not tire-busters, but still not great. Hence the bunnyhopping.

A more realistic sign might include a bicyclist shaking his fist at a knot of walkers spread across the MUP from side to side and completely oblivous to repeated bells and warning shouts.

My wife wanted to do a short 22 mile ride this morning on her upright before the wind picked up too bad. I spent the whole ride trying to keep from getting dropped, unsuccessfully. Feeling totally fatigued.

Sometimes, you're the hammer and sometimes... as the saying goes.

Other than being tired yesterday and today, yep. My neighbor did inform me that he tested positive for COVID-19 a couple days ago but we decided that I hadn’t been around him for at least two weeks and even then, it would have been outside.

If you watch James (aka Hank) on GCN, he bunnyhops cattleguards all the time. Mind you, he's a former pro, not a 63 year old schmo, like I am.
