I met a fellow Michigander on here years back who talked me into a group ride, then joining the club he belonged too.

My dad was a lather all his life in the STL area. I still remember him coming home with his fingers split from the dry and cold, and how tough it was working through the winter. Watching him work his ass off kept me in school.
I'm too old and have been working for myself too long to simply pull up, move, and look for a job. Plus, my clients are pretty much all located in DFW, so my business is not really portable. I can see potentially moving after I hang up the working gig, but that would depend on where our kids are. My wife is going to want to stay close to where ever the future grand babies are likely to be. Quite frankly, so do I.

The plan is 5 years 6 if I have to, and the co. Let's me.

My dad was Die maker. When there was work, it was 7 days a week. I didn't see a lot of him as a yute.

That is to be expected. When you think about the number of members who use the forum anonymity to be rude, insulting or downright dicks it's not surprising a fair percentage of people get turned off and leave.

As screwed up as LA is, I would stay here on the outskirts if it wasn't so expensive. I want to move somewhere cheaper but Mrs John seems stuck. If my landlord or his heirs kick us out, I don't know where we would go. 1 bedroom apartments in decent neighborhoods are $2300.
Still, there is year-round riding and a huge variety of terrain. A lot of groups/clubs to ride with and most of my friends are here. I try to avoid going over the hill toward LA proper and all of the beach communities are overcrowded and traffic is a mess everywhere.
Since covid a lot of traffic has freed up so people drive extremely fast and recklessly all over. It's as if they are trying to make up for all the years of stop and go. It's a different kind of awful.

I've always heard that it's a bad idea to move to follow the grandkids. Once you do, your kid's job changes and takes them someplace else, and you either have to move or are stuck in a place with no reason to be there.
Our daughter will probably always be in Texas, and is planning a move from Dallas back to Austin this year. FSIL's family is well entrenched in Fort Worth. They will likely be the first of our two to provide some offspring. Our son is the wildcard. I can see him moving to a different state or even to Europe.

not going there. My sil's people are in the u.p. That's nuts. No economy and colder longer winters.

Our other “house” is walking distance from the ocean, it’s nice because it never really gets too cold in the winter (almost never below 15) or too hot in the summer (almost never above 90). The trade off is that when Nor’easters hit, we get significant snowfall and wind. It’s pretty awesome to go down to the causeway after a storm and see the 7 foot diameter boulders in the middle of the road from the storm surge.

The obvious downside of 5 p.m. is there's a lot more drivers, so better odds of encountering a bad one. And people may be more frustrated at the traffic.

It's a shame because she is a good person and was hurt and even a little frightened by those idiots. Mostly the one guy but one of his friends would add to the crap sometimes.

But, I could never afford to live there. Maybe if I hit the lottery...a big one. Then I would only have to work part time...

I've been to Ca. A few times when I traveled for work. And on vacations there. I love Ca. I spent a month riding my bike all over.. Hell I even enjoyed Bakersfield! I met and rode with a few forum members. Umd, Joel. I slept on Joel's couch for a week when I was there. I rode all over near Santa barbara/Carpinteria. Did the Hollywood sign climb. The mountains. It is truly awesome. Maybe some day again..

California has some insane money. We took a trip to Carmel one year and stayed at a place in Carmel Valley. At dinner one night, we met a couple who summered in Carmel Valley to get away from the fog that often surrounds their other house on 17 Mile Drive in Pebble Beach. Who has two houses less than 20 miles apart???

I used to follow umd on strava but did a purge last year. Hes a good guy. He gave me some nice ride routes to follow. and took me out on one. Nice of him to wait for this fat flatlander, lol.
I stayed with Joel the first week of a month long work tour of CA. The job was only 2 hours a day ish then time to ride. I did that for an entire month and then blew 10 days of vacation on the coast. Best month of the 6 years I was with that co.
