Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Zion is good. One that I’ve also heard good things about is [CxT] Roasting Company. They have a place not far from Zion and another on the north side. I go to a place called Leaves n Beans, also on the north side and one near me in Morton. I’ve never been able to get in to the north side [CxT] Roasting Company because it’s always crowded. Very popular.

Hope your wife is feeling better.

Best of luck. Find something to do to replace riding. Something, anything. I didn't and it drove me crazy. I felt like I lost my sense of purpose. Kind of misplaced priority I know but riding is how I identified myself. Maybe ride indoors for 45 minutes 3 or 4 days a week?

I hope you get it sorted out and you can get back on the road.

10.34 miles was enough today. Felt a little ouchy so kept it short.

Uhf da. Not my favorite movie. I watched it the day before I flew here for a job interview that led me to move here. It was -15F the day I was here. Still took the job.

No regrets on that. We will probably live here for the rest of our lives. No Waffle House, but "The Shack" does serve really good Midwestern heart attack food.

And the road riding groups I ride with include lots of under 40's.

The movie should have been called "Philadelphia", "Camden" or "Newark", but the people I've known from there all talk funny and the story might have struck too close to home.

You know what would or, perhaps, will drive me crazy about an e-bike? The uncertainty, when riding alone, about whether I should be pedaling at any given time and how hard. I tend to obsess about things like that.

Wonder how BAM is doing. I'm about 6 hours out of Williamsburg, and talked to his wife. She told me to grab whatever bikes I wanted, but not to linger around her house. Things sounded grim.

Purist that I am, I ordered green beans this time. I plan to roast them on a rocket stove; maybe use up a tiny bit of the ever accumulating wood shop scraps

And, worrying about battery levels, and having to pedal that 30 pound beast home without assist.

Possible long(er than normal) ride tomorrow morning, since we have cool weather. Another one likely on Sunday.

I've never ridden one but there are different types. 3 of my friends have Specialized Turbo Creo bikes. They turn the assist off when cruising. There are 3 (I think) programmable power settings. You program each power setting for the percentage of assist you want in that setting.

One friend has heart issues and uses assist most of the time. Still, if he does a fast club ride he will get a-fib. Other friend got one because he got tired of trying to control his weight. At least that's the simple answer. He's always been a masher and he says the e-bike demands high cadence. Took him a while to adapt and figure it out. Showed me graphs of his heart rate running way higher than before.

I'm scheduled for a stress echo next month. After that I hope to hear that I can keep hammering the regular bike. We'll see.

I think the Creos are heavier than that, but I haven't seen one on a scale. Another friend has a Trek which looks more like a cruiser and has a big motor and big battery. His is over 65 pounds but I'm not sure if that is with the extra battery. He defeated the speed limiter and it will go 40mph+.

I have ridden over mountains on a 60ish pound touring bike, so it's doable.

Trek Domane LT is about 31.5 pounds. Not too bad really. Only 65 mile range though.

i have a pretty nice creo. it’s very ridable with the assist off, which is how i rode it 99% or the time before getting a non electric road bike. the power levels are completely customizable in both ratio and maximum power. with good wheels, group, seat, bars, etc it weighs around 27lb. the irony was that the hills actually seemed easier because i used it turned off so much, the 13lb difference was very noticeable.

First friend and his wife got them and range was rarely an issue. She's only 120 pounds at most and he's 150. They turn the power off on flats most of the time.
We did a 65 mile club ride with a lot of hammering and he did use most of his battery that time. They can do longer climbing rides at a slower pace without running out.

The claimed range is affected by the speed limiter. The bikes that assist to 21 mph have a longer claimed range than those that assist to 28mph.
