Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

One of my partners had one that definitely needed to be tested.

I got a call last night from someone who was at a large gathering last Saturday and was informed that someone else there was positive, so that patient would be tested if she has any symptoms.

That's it so far. But I am sure there will be more.

Wife says that remote co-worker just informed her that MI (co-worker's state of residence) just shut down schools for a month. I mean, if there were hopes of keeping this in the cage, I'd be all for something this drastic, but damn.

It’s out of the cage. The goal is to slow it down, disperse the load over time, and spare the system.

Hey @datlas and @MoAlpha Mr H was asking me about the test metrology and I honestly didn’t know.

looked it up and it looks like it’s a RT-PCR. Do either of you know what the lab turn around time is for reporting test results for this?

Any likelihood of a bedside “spot” type of test? For some reason when I’ve heard reference to “test kits,” I Was imagining that a positive/negative bedside spot Test was what we’re talking about.

It's a PCR test and takes a few days to run. That's my understanding. I don't think they have a rapid ELISA assay out yet and doubt there will be one anytime soon.

I believe the "test kit" is a viral swab. Similar to what we use for running HSV and other viral studies.

Why is it referred to as a test kit? Don’t you have the normal supplies you’d need to collect appropriate samples in your clinic?

Correct. It's possible that eventually everyone will be exposed to this and it will be part of the pathosphere, as I said before. The goal is to make that as slow as possible to happen over many YEARS.

The people who are running this ****-show are morons. LabCorp website says we can use a regular viral swab, which we have plenty of in my office. But my Admin said the LabCorp rep told her we CANNOT use a regular viral swab and must wait for special "kits" which we are allegedly getting soon.

Sad!

All I know is that the various tests are all PCR for pieces of the viral genome and there must be a cutoff for copies per ml. Knowing no more than you, I’m guessing a quick, site of care, test would have to be serological.

The terminology “test kit” is really a misnomer then. It’s actually a “sample collection” kit.

Not a big deal, other than accurate words do make a difference in the level of people’s understanding of what’s going on.

I heard on yesterday’s network news that there was a newly developed test that gets results in just 6 hours. No, have no way to confirm that.

We were supposed to head up to the Central Coast this weekend with friends, but we cancelled. We were doing low risk things like cycling and wine tasting and going out to small restaurants. But I’ve been interacting with a lot of people at work, riding public transportation etc. From a population medicine perspective, I didn’t feel right about potentially be a source of disease spread up the coast.

Our friends think we’re overreacting, which is fine. They might be correct. Still, I think we’ve made the right call. It’s hard to have training about infectious disease and epidemiology, and to have taken a professional oath to protect public health, and justify a pleasure trip in the early days of an epidemic.

Sad though because they’ll have sunshine up there until Sunday, whereas we’ll have 3 days of rain. Not sure I’ll get to ride at all this weekend when I’m all rested up for a high volume weekend.

In other medical news, I’m scheduled for hernia surgery a week from today and I’m just hoping it goes off on schedule and there’s no delays because this thing is becoming a consistent nuisance every evening lately. I had a pre-op Visit with my PCP yesterday and he didn’t like how the EKG looked so I’ve scheduled a visit with the cardiologist for Monday.

Drama, but I should be fine. If not, who wants my RB1 at 62cm. Nobody’s getting the Merlin, that gets buried with me.

Understood, which is why I think that things like closing schools for an entire state for a month is a bit much. It's going to kick up again. And again. And again. Are they going to close down schools for a month each time? Are parents going to beg out of work for a month each time? Educate, employ best practices, make sensible decisions on low-hanging fruit like certain extracurriculars, but shutting down education and care for months at a time is a whole 'nother strain.

Our living situation is remote. Out at the edge of a town of 10,000, mostly peasants. 25 km out from the city, who's international airport has only two gates.
Coming here, in these times, is like reading Tom Clancy. Or Stephen King.
I can hear birds singing and nothing else, now, at this time of day. And the wind. A very different world than the one I'm reading about. Sigh
No inkling of panic, or even knowledge that there might be reason for panic
I wish you all well in the coming weeks and months.

Too big for me. Good luck. I remember the nuisance thing. I waited a long time until I said something to my parents and got the surgery in college.

Went upstairs into the store and it was a madhouse. Decided to wander around. Shelves with things like canned tuna, pasta, soup and canned beans and vegetables were stripped nearly bare. No paper products to be had. Even the olive oil selection was nearly limited to the really expensive stuff.

A guy I know reported that he stopped in around 7:30. Every line was open, but the cues stretched to the back of the store. I was surprised that there was anything left to buy.
There had been some panic buying earlier but yesterday things went nuts. Some have speculated it was a reaction to the address given by 45 on Wednesday evening.

It's a mess. I gave my kid a fist bump this morning, said congrats on the first day of Spring Break, and left for work.

It's a hair large(all my bikes are a hair large) and I covet an RB1. Will your estate cover shipping?
