Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Worthy noting here that you have actual winter, whereas for us in CA, winter is about as bad as early fall for you.

All this beer talk sent me to the fridge for a cold one. We're currently into Sierra Nevada Torpedo, Extra IPA. Nice.

I'm very much over IPAs. Give me a good Porter, or just a good Pale Ale. I don't need my teeth etched.

Many of the customers that tip with beer at the bike shop, bring IPAs. It's kind of amusing, because the manager loves IPAs but the owner hates them. I don't have a preference -- I usually just leave the young guys to it.

While I would agree that there are some examples of IPAs that have pushed the IBUs to kind of stupid levels, I've found that some of the more balanced IPAs are the ones that make it to the top of my list. Current Favorite: Deschutes Fresh Haze. That said, it's a great time to be a beer drinker. No matter what your preference, someone is making a really good beer for your drinking pleasure.

Humorous. I've always preferred more robust flavored beers, so the hoppy IPAs are right up my alley. Why Bud and Bud light and the like are not totally out of business is beyond my comprehension.

I was watching vintage bike restoration videos again, and found the one from BikeIt UK that turned me onto the Sante groupset. Then I found one with a white RX100 groupset, a Peugeot from the early 90s - I think Shimano only made RX100 in white for a year or so. That got me idly perusing the RX100 parts on Ebay, and I found a white crank, brakeset, and brake levers. Next thing I know, I get an offer from the seller, $9 off of each. No, I didn't buy them. But this feature Ebay has, where the seller gets notified of a nibble and can respond with an offer, strikes me as really dangerous for people like me with more dollars than sense.

Two of the guys in my club were, until very recently, head brewers at local places (one of them is looking in to opening a new place, but will be contracting out a club-branded beer sometime soonish). They are both very much over IPAs. One funny and telling episode: before leaving his position, I was at the brewery with one of them and asked for a specific IPA (the brewery had become known for their IPAs). He couldn't find the ******' tap for that one, but he could find his pilsner tap blindfolded.

My Mom used to work with a woman who bragged that the only spices she ever used were salt and pepper, and that was and probably is still true of a lot of folks who live around there. So there's a market for food and drink that doesn't taste like much.

My observation is that it's a good time to be an IPA drinker, maybe a 'sour beer' drinker, but the number of porters and stouts in the beer section has actually dwindled the last 10 years.

I'm W'ing FW today (actually at work), and my office overlooks the end of Guadalupe Canyon Road in Brisbane - ever seen "Bullitt"? Remember the end of the chase? The Charger running into the gas station that obligingly blows up? Yeah, right across the street. Anyhow, a lot of nice cars go by because driving Guadalupe Canyon is fun. I look out my window, and there, sitting at the stop light waiting to turn is a Mercedes Benz 300 SL Gullwing, from the mid 50s. I'd have paid real money for a pair of binoculars just then.

Their brewing operations in Syracuse are going strong. Hard seltzer spike drives Anheuser-Busch to invest millions in its CNY brewery - syracuse.com

I can see that. IPAs have definitely become a dominating category in a fairly short amount of time.

I can. 1990. I had 2 Lite beers at my friends house in Hope, Arkansas after a 3000 mile bike ride. Those were the first drinks I had after I quit drinking in the late 80s. Not a drop since then.
Lite beer is yuck and so is Bud Light. I liked Bud and if I had a dollar for every one I drank I could buy some nice new bikes.

Good IPAs aren’t really pushing the IBUs these days, they’re hazy and juicy tasting. New England style did wonders.
