Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Most places I've ridden, lines tend to mean state-maintained, as opposed to county. Once you're really out in the country they're all empty.

Road in Amish country during my recent tour. Notice the marks left by buggies and the dried horse dung. It was virtually traffic free on a Saturday afternoon. The crazy thing is that maybe two miles later I got buzzed, well in violation of PA’s 4’ passing law. There was no oncoming traffic and a clear sight line. From what I could see, the driver looked like an old lady. I was so pissed I let out one of the loudest F-Us I ever have. Felt bad because I was right across from an Amish farmhouse.

Leaving camp at 8 am. No traffic passed for the entire four or so miles. Maybe 1 or 2 cars in the other direction.

RJ i’ll be in Syracuse tomorrow, we stay by the airport. Judging the distance on strava, it looks like a decent walk to your shop.

If there's a motor vehicle out there with my name on it, it's driven an old lady without a trace of malice and who will make the most sympathetic impression on a jury in a contributory negligence state.

I feel the same way, and I actually hope my family will forgive her.

In Illinois, the highway structure is State (and Federal), County, Township, and City maintained respectively.

In the county that I worked in, we had our own painting equipment and painted all county maintained highways with center and edge lines. We also hired out to townships and cities though they don’t stripe every road depending upon ADT and need. Some have their own equipment, too.

Regarding no passing lines, there is a set rule and formula as dictated by the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices and governs all roads in the United States. However, many local maintenance authorities stripe no passing zones by feel and opinion which leads to some weird line usage.

What's the point of not forgiving? It would be nice, however, to pry a few hundred thou out of her for local cycling advocacy. Around here, she's likely to have significant assets.

Yeah, I guess big counties must have to paint their roads.

Idiots who won't cross a double yellow to give you a foot or two are prominent in my bestiary of evil drivers.

Yeah, I am ok with that. Make some lemonade from the lemons.

Agreed. NPZ lines are determined by the design speed to safely pass a car. For example, a 55 zone requires a safe sight distance of roughly 1000’. Obviously, if the vehicle [bicycle) is moving much slower than the road design speed, a driver should be able to use their own judgement when crossing the NPZ line.

So, on Saturday, I rode with a couple of guys from my old neighborhood whom I hadn't seen in many years and are members of the most "elite" local cycling club. I mainly ran, lifted, and did Masters swim workouts with them, but I had done a few rides with them back in the 90s on my old road bike with the Nuovo Record, sewups, etc. After we schlepped around for a while, the one I used to train with the most and was closest to personally, says something like, "Nice bike, now I can start calling you up for rides." See what a soulless plastic bike will do for you?

Same here. I want to get some leaflets explaining the 4 foot rule and how it's OK to cross the double yellow line if no oncoming traffic to local drivers, and tie them to a rock to throw through the rear window of the offenders. Sigh.

My pear tree which usually produces hundreds of pears was literally pearless this year. I don't know whether it was a shortage of bees or the abnormally warm winter that preceded it, or both, but I have no healthy snack to hold me over for the winter.
