I can bunny hop debris, cracks, potholes. expansion joints, and all of that fun stuff without issue... but hopping up curbs is a mental, rather than physical, obstacle, and I just can't bring myself to do it. It's kind of like taking off a vest or jacket when riding - I can definitely ride no-hands long enough to do it, but part of me thinks about something stupid happening, like a sleeve getting hung up just as a squirrel decides to commit suicide in my spokes.

As a frivolous cyclist, I find it a useful skill. Obviously not required, because I've manage to ride for 25 years without acquiring that particular skill.
When I started looking into it, I discovered there are two types of bunnyhop. One is pretty simple, the "English Bunnyhop", where you basically just jump up then pull the bike off the ground evenly front and rear. This is what I'm trying to do. It doesn't get you a lot of lift, so it's not the one you want to use to go over big things, but if you only have to lift a couple inches, it works well, if you do it right.
The other involves shifting your weight back and lifting your front wheel them shifting forward and lifting the rear. It gets you a lot more lift, so it's the best kind for jumping curbs, roots and logs on trails, etc. and thus it tends to be what gravel riders and MTBers do.

It also depends on the roads you're on. If you're in a line and suddenly there is a hole and you have less than a second to react, you jump it. Can't jerk the bike to one side if you don't know where everyone is.
Seems like I do better when I get surprised, if I have a couple seconds to think about it I tend to land on the obstacle with the rear wheel.
It can be a handy skill on a mountain bike ride. On the mtb I have it seems to be ok with being slammed into things. I encountered a 1 foot wide rut and was able to lift the front wheel but the rear wheel was on it's own. Came through ok. It's a lot harder to get both wheels off the ground on a 32 pound full squish bike, at least for me.

Rarely have I been able to bunny hop (the English kind as genejockey exolained). Like big john, I can only clumsily manage it if I’m caught unawares by a pothole or something.
