Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

On the reef. The navigator figured, "Hey, we're out in the middle of the Indian Ocean, why bother to look at the plotter at large scale when I set up the next waypoint?"

Second try he finished and became the first finisher over 60. He learned enough in his failed attempt to get things sorted and even had time to get his crew a motel at one point.
Third time he became the first finisher over 65, I think. The only problem he had was falling asleep on the bike near the finish. He wasn't hurt and remounted and stayed awake.
These races were 2005-2008 I think. I think he skipped one or two years. He said each effort cost about $30K including renting a motorhome, fueling the motorhome and chase car both ways, feeding the crew, etc. He may have included lost wages in there.
He got some sponsorship, the best of which was gas cards. He also got free clothing but I forgot from whom. He fueled on a product called Spiz and I think they gave him cash as well as product.
Serious hardass stuff.

I don't know what this means but what I wondered is how far off "course" a pilotless craft might go if everyone sleeps for several hours.

Well, um, that's not conducive to racing objectives. If you do that you really didn't want to race in the first place.

It was always about the racing, just like pro cycling, which also emerged from the French idea of how to sell newspapers. The solo circumnavigation races are orders of magnitude crazier and more dangerous.

He drove her away with some insensitive comments when her husband got sick.

Of course later I drove her away with stupid comments about how I thought she was a groovy chick.

I am sorry, but IMO anyone who does those type of ultra-endurance events like RAAM etc. are possibly crazy.

I would consider a cross-country ride, but it would be at 100 miles/day with overnight stays in hotels or campsites, bike-packing. Pushing it too hard gets rid of all the fun.

You would essentially self-disqualify if you stopped somewhere for, say, 20 minutes.

Did you ever read about RAAM champion Jure Robic? Seriously crazy, as in his crew members were afraid of him during races. It was said that he consumed 100,000 calories during a 7 day race in Europe. I think he was unbeatable most of the time.

Not too far off course. The autopilots they use are very good.

Sails work like airplane wings. Unless you are going dead downwind, you are actually using the sails to create lift which pulls the boat forward. If you have the sails trimmed for what we call a close hauled course for example, the boat can (if it's a well balanced boat and depending on wind and sea state) sail that close hauled course on its own without any steering input. It may veer off a bit from time to time, but the boat can correct itself. It's also not the fastest thing to do because the boat will not steer itself around and through waves as well as a person will, not will it trim the sails itself to account for changes in wind direction, velocity, and sea state.

It's actually a really cool feeling when you get the boat dialed in to the point that it sails itself.
