Who's riding the San Bruno Mountain Hill Climb 01/01/10?
By chance, I just found out that online reg opens up tomorrow; so I think I'm going to sign up for my first official race - who else is in for January's climb?
I remember reading posts last year about whether it'd better to go for Cat 5 or 35+, any advice out there?

I think the 35+ field starts a few minutes earlier but in a hill climb it doesn't matter; it doesn't count for a mass start credit for upgrading and pack handling skills are less critical.

Thanks Henry, so does each field have it's own "start time" assigned, or is your time determined based upon when the first riders start?

I'm in. Either 35+ or Cat 5 for me as well. Haven't been riding much at all because of health issues but seem a bit better now. But this one is going to hurt!

I did Cat 5 in 2006, P/1/2 in 2007 & 2008 and 35+ in 2009.
I can't decide between 35+ or P/1/2 for 2010. P/1/2 gets to start on the front line. 35+ is a few rows back.
Cat 5 starts in the very back. They used to start everyone at the same time. I wish I had entered 35+ instead of Cat 5 in 2006 because it was tough to go around everyone, but in 2008 and 2009 they split the race into 2 groups (separated by 5 minutes) with P/1/2, Cat 3, 35+ & P/1/2/3 women in group 1 and everyone else in group 2. Cat 5 is still at the back of the 2nd group.
Cat 5 would most likely be easier to win or place in the "money" than 35+, but being in the 35+ you get to race head to head with Cat 1 & Cat 2 riders and may get pulled to a faster time.

Thanks Chris - I don't think that winning or placing in the money will be chief among my concerns... I'll give this some thought, then flip a coin.

I'll be out at there tomorrow (12/26) with a couple friends at around 9:30 for 3 repeats up the climb.
Pace will be moderate on the 1st, hard for the 2nd, then race effort for the 3rd.
Come join us for some fun!

I suspect your moderate pace will be my race pace, but I'll try to make it out there.

I was thinking the exact same thing as pacificaslim. Sadly I can't make tomorrow, but am planning to go for a couple of repeats on Tuesday morning should anyone want to tag along and drop me.

I've been a slug since Monday's spin class. I'm going to be in pain next time I hit SBM.

I'll be heading down Tuesday morning for some last minute suffering. 2 or 3 climbs after warming up on my trainer for the full experience. I plan to start climbing at 9:30 for anyone interested.

What does it mean on the flyer when it says "One day licenses available at registration."

Cranks, you need a license to enter this race but if you don't plan on racing any more USAC events the rest of the year, you can buy a single-day license ($10?) at the race instead of buying the more expensive annual license ($60?).

I ended up being a cheapskate and pre-ordered a 1day license for $10, which apparently I pick up at reg. I may do other events in 2010, but I didn't want to drop $60 at the time.
