Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Other wide aluminum clincher rims (like HED Ardennes)?

I'm thinking of having a PowerTap wheel built up. I like the width of the HED Ardennes wheels, but also like the idea of going with an independent builder. Is there another quality wide aluminum clincher rim like the HED Ardennes?

Not long ago, Velocity released their A23 rim. I've spotted a few very affordable wheelsets when shopping for my commuter. The rim is part of their road rim catalog; any builder can build it with whatever hub you want. I'm not sure how an A23 stacks up Ardennes weight wise; claimed A23 weight is 426g.

Build up a set of Velocity Dyad rims. They are 24 mm wide, designed for touring and abuse. I have a set laced to DT Swiss 240 S hubs, 32 DT spokes. I run them with 25 mm tires and they provide a nice ride quality and are pretty close to bomb proof as a road trainer.

If the main goal is to have an independent builder build your wheels (and maybe use a non-HED front hub), you can order the rims separately from HED. I did this and ordered a set of 32-hole Bastogne rims, which I had built locally with a Campy Veloce front hub and PowerTap rear. The wheels are quite comfortable and strong.

If you go this route, you probably have to call HED directly. However, they are quite easy to deal with.

Also, in the past, they did not sell the 24 and 20 hole drillings used on the Ardennes. I think this was due to supply and demand issues, and may have changed now.

23mm width... so that must be 17mm internal width.

velocity synergy is 23mm width on the outside. bit heavy at 500g/ea

otherwise there's sun CR-18, mavic A719, which are 24mm wide on the outside.
