How far up can I put a seatpost?

Hey folks.

So I'm trying to get my saddle up high enough - but just found that to get it high enough, it's getting quite close to the top of the seat tube. (see image below).

Is this dangerously high? I'm wondering it the lever effect of my 13 stone bunch of bones on such a small securing point might be cause for concern.

Any advice, greatly appreciated.

John

the bottom of the seat post should be below the bottom edge of the top tube, otherwise you risk damage to the frame.

I hate to sound thick - but where's the 'bottom edge' of the top tube? Do you mean below where the weld point is?

My frame description knowledge isn't the best. I need to take a language course in how to describe parts of my bike....

Ah. So I'm really rather risky right now then. Time to buy a new, longer seatpost...

Most seatpost have a minimum insert distance marked on them. Your photo is an accident waiting to happen. Buy a longer post.

Have you fully removed the seatpost to determine exactly how long it is? Could there be an opening on the seatpost itself? I ask because I see what looks like more seatpost below this point. Also, I see measurement markings on the seatpost, but is there a maximum extension (or minimum insertion) mark on it?

You don't see where the seat post ends? He circled it for you.

That is extended way too high! As mentioned, should be a MAX Extension or MIN Insertion markings on the post. If none, check other similar seatposts to get a rough idea.
Yes, indeed, time for a new post.

Since the mid-1970s in the USA, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (aka "CPSA") has required that seatposts be marked with a "Minimum Insertion" line below which it is not consider safe to use. In the UK you may not have such a requirement, but the pre-CPSA rule of thumb we used was that the post should extend below the seat clamp a distance at least twice the diameter of the post.

I guess then I was looking at a burr at the bottom edge of the seat tube slot. Having measurement markings so close to the [supposed] end of the seatpost does seem a bit unusual.

Just measured two of the seatposts I have loose around the house. Minimum insertion is approximately 75mm

I suspect someone has sawed off part of that seatpost.

I just measured an old 27.2 and the mark is at 3&1/8". What you have is an accident waiting to happen. You can easily damage the seat tube of the frame with the leverage that is putting on it.

Hey folks. Just to let you know I took a seatpost off another Giant MTB, which was about 15-20cm longer, and am using that instead as it fits well inside. the 30.8mm diameter of the seatpost is a pain though, as I can't find any new ones locally (hence ripping it out of the other bike). Cranky Old Road may be right - looking at it, the bottom of the one that WAS in looks different to the bottom of the standard one I replaced it with.

Anyway - thanks again for all your help in keeping me safe.

John.

I'd be more worried about damaging my 'nards than the frame.
