The more I think about this, the more I think it was simply user error, and not mechanical. Granted, the broken cleat did complicate the scenario, but in the end, you f'd up by not being able to twist off the other cleat. "My normal mode of operation where I have all of my body weight available to torque bla bla bla..." Falling while in cleats does happen to everyone. It's that simple.

This kind of thing always happens to me. I have been trying to decide what kind of petals to by as my old ones have seen better days. After much deliberation and consternation, I decided to get Speedplay Zeros. Now I will be wondering if that will happen to me. Oh well.

One would hope that falling over whilst clipped in, for whatever reason, would bring laughs but no drama.
One would hope.....
Let's refrain from personal attacks.

All I know is that if I am to fall at the same ratio of miles to falls as umd, I can't fall again for a long, long, long time....But, as much as I want to blame my bike for causing the fall, I have to live with the sad fact that my leg/foot said FU to my brain. I can still remember looking at my foot, saying to myself unclip already, and nothing happened. I like my speedplays though, step on them and you are in, no looking, no fuss.

Haven't tried SpeedPlays. I converted to Looks (from cleats/straps) sometime around 1990 and have stayed there though 1 bike did have generic SPDs for awhile. Didn't like them.
Falling is always embarrassing.

Yesterday I almost fell over. A strong wind hit me when I was unclipped (one leg) and standing at a light, and threw me off balance. Close one . I was solo with no cars around though, so I would have completely denied it if it actually happened.

wow. tough crowd. I've never tried zeros, but have ridden x's since they were invented. I have never been stuck in, but I have broken a few cleat springs, which leads to failure to engage fully. not nearly as sucky.
Speedplay sez, change 'em every 5000 miles, though.

The point of this thread was to allow everyone to laugh at me, I know you all want to.
I am considering switching pedals now.

I went to SPD-SL because they are similar to the Looks I used to use back in the 90's. Virtually maintenance free and as long as you don't walk all over the place with them, the cleats last a decent time. I have at least 4000 miles on mine and they barely look scuffed up.

Wow, that stinks, how many miles before they failed? I fell off the first time I went out with my new pedals, came to a red light and forgot to take out my shoe from the pedal.
I fell over without any scratches on me or the bike. A grandma who was taking her grandkid for a walk giggled and said yep, you got to be careful my son also cycles.
lol

I believe the word you're all looking for is hubris.
You might not like the SPD-SL "float", which is really just wiggle, at least on my couple of year old Ultegras. I switched from Speedplays (which may or may not have been exacerbating my knee problem), and I still miss the "positive" connection of the Speedplays. Maybe I'll go back someday.

Ehhh.. I have been riding SPD-SLs for the last 2 weeks while waiting to get new bolts for my Speedplays, and I have already started to get various niggles and aches in my knees. 1 more week to go... *sigh*. No way I ever ride anything except Speedplays if I have a choice.
umd - to make this thread even more epic, was there a crosswind?

As for the positive connection, I always felt the Looks and SPD-SL ones had a more firm connection. I always got a side-to-side rocking sensation with my Speedplays.

Edit: so happy to be right. Actually had this happen to me before after a rest-stop was in a sandy location. I managed to ride around in circles though until I found something to grab onto. Had to take my shoe off, then pry shoe from bike.
One of speedplay's many flaws, in my experience.

That is correct
I've found that I am not super-sensitive to cleat position.
Yeah, I've been generally happy with Speedplay but I've had enough problems (although infrequent) that I am strongly considering switching. There is a big Time presence in Santa Barbara because the president of Time NA lives here, so I am strongly leaning in that direction.

I'm pretty good at trackstanding, but it's hard to do it while blocked on 3 sides and violently trying to rotate your feet.
