Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? I may be selling mine soon too. I'm looking for something lighter. These things have held up really well though. The bullhorns are deda chrono nero, and yes they are 31.8. I love em!

I'll snap a picture next time at the track. I still have to play w/ the bars a bit (Not parallel to ground), I'll be getting a new stem eventually, but that's the only OS one I had in the parts bin.

Its either Jedi Mind Tricks or Photoshop that is keeping that FELT upright.

Ay, we NYCers should get together for a swap/trade meet!

I'm no photoshop expert, but I think it's the clone/stamp tool.

Thanks man! One of my friends is buying it, so I'm keeping it in the family

As for the photos, I used a piece of clear 1/4" plexiglass wedged behind the crank arm to hold it up. Then I just removed the edges of the plexi in photoshop (clone stamp). It's my first attempt at it but it seemed to work pretty well.

MAN that's sweet! Awesome bike, Dan (assuming that's your name)!

Tried my hand at my first wrap job today....eh...feels great. I would replace the brake lever that doesn't fit over the flared portion of the bars, but meh...works for now =)

Used the Fizik Microtex. Crappy cell pic:

That was a thought too, the Fuji. A lot of these bikes are road bike conversions and I hadn't seen one from a Fastback frame. I actually like the squattier frame for some odd reason. The bike I did get is the Vilano track bike, as I've assembled, rode adjusted, tuned rode, adjusted and re-tuned, even trued wheels, for the price it's not a bad bike. I went that route, keeping it cheap, so that when I decide to go after a real track bike, the $ 256 into it, I should be able to sell it for something to offset the price of a higher end bike. Wasn't sure I'd like a FG even, and for traffic and city rides, I don't like the FG, but do like the SS freewheel. The Fuji Classic track doesn't have the freewheel, but has the flip flop rear hub. Anyway, the frame geometry of the Fastback is a road bike and it has the lower profile frame that I prefer, but finding one would be a conversion project and no horoizontal dropouts.

Actually, the Vilano has a nearly identical frame geometry as the Fastback from my crude measurements from Schwinn's website, so I may already have what I'm looking for. I'll see how long this Vilano lasts, who knows, may not be a reason to ever get anything else. For a cheaper bike it's actually riding better than I expected. Amazing what even the slightest of wheel trueup adjustments can do. My only issue with the Vilano is it seems to be a kids bike, crank arms are 165 mm and not the longer 175 mm I'm accustomed with in the road bike I have. What else bugs me ? The frame isn't the greatest finish, welds and paint, but that could be a plus, nobody may want to steal it ?

The only thing about a chrome bike is on a sunny day, I'd hate to try to look at the bike. Even driving a car, I can't stand chrome bumpers, the light reflection off that chrome is worse than staring into the sun.

Question:

On the track, one of the experienced racers came over and told us that we don't want that much chain slack on the track, just enough so that the chain doesn't fall off, kinda what looks like on your bike (Racer EX)... can you explain that?

Less friction loss if it's a bit slack.
