Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

A small part of me wants to get one. Then I started thinking $9800 is a lot to replace because of a crash in a crit. I think I'll stick to the R3SL plan.

Screw the R3SL and go with the R3. Save $900 at the cost of only 3 oz.

But I'm already saving $4800 for about 200 grams!

I'm seriously thinking about getting one.
Bought a complete bike about a year ago from a shop, I think they were going out of business, for ~$3k. Sold off the Dura-Ace stuff.

Um... my R3SL came in at 780 grams with everything removed. Add the seatpost clamp, and derailler, and bottom-bracket-shift-cable-guides and it's still 809, with a 54 cm frame. So... it's about 150 gram delta, I would think (54 to 54).

It was a year or two old, at the time... (not that I care), and I had been poking around for a year or two before buying. So yes, it was a good deal, but I'd found other deals - like probikekit or something - for $2400, a year or two before that... so how much is your time worth, both in terms of looking, and in terms of not enjoying a new, presumably better bike?

This is the million dollar question. I'm not convinced my next carbon Cervelo, Look, or Time will be "better," and that's why I haven't pulled the trigger. An outstanding deal, like the $1900 closeout S2s at Excel, almost pushed me over the edge last month, but then they sold the last 56.

As for the time involved in searching, for me, have the fun is in the hunt.

I'm building one up with SRAM Apex, Mavic Aksiums, and a Brooks B17.
No bottle cages- I roll with a Camelbak.

Not if you're getting into racing. Too many sketchy roadies in Cat 5 races.

Uhh. No. Not as a first race bike. Buy one that you can crash, because it probably will happen.

Yup, definitely. You don't want to give up anything to your competition before even getting to the line, do you?

$9800 for a bland paintjob but it's a light paintjob nonetheless. If I was a GM exec and got a $1M bonus I'd buy one.

I actually cashed in on the excel S2 closeout before it sold out (bought the last one in my size). I was disappointed because it came with a black fork, not red fork. You didn't miss out.

Wait a tick, that's not the same crankset as in this video... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ipjuW...eature=related

Agreed, the crankset on CC is fugly. Much prefer the one in this video. What is it? (You can see it in the video at 0:40)

I think it's the Rotor Agills crankset with maybe Sram chainrings on it to replace the oval Rotor ones.

It was obvious. Some are a tad concrete.

$39 a gram, seems reasonable to me.
