everest challange

i am too lazy to search through all of the old everest challange threads... does anyone have garmin data from previous years?

also, what are the steepest sections? are there any prolonged sections over 10%+? do most people go for sram xx (or perhaps an apex setup this year) to get the most gearing possible? what's the avg cat 4 climbing speed?

The end of the last climb each on day.

The end of the last climb on each day. The second day is especially hard. I think the final part is about 2000' in three miles.

I run a 12-30 cassette and a 50/34 chainrings.

At the beginning of day 1 or the end of day 2?

If you can average 3000 ft/hr you'll be (very roughly) in the top 1/2 or 1/3. You can look up finishing times on usa cycling and the event web site.

There's a pile of posts about it. They're worth searching and reading even though everyone who's done it or plans to will post here too. Also in past years I've collected all the race reports I could find and linked them on my blog.

SRAM XX hasn't been an option until this year. Steep sections at 10k are different than steep sections at below 5k, especially after lots of climbing and attacking if your race is actually interesting. I'm sure someone has some great GPS data, but I seem to remember 17% pitches at the finish of the first day, and 10% average for the last 5k of the second day, with some flat sections. I just missed the gc podium with ~ 3 W/kg on the last climbs in cat 3. So, it's hard. Though lower gearing would be nice, I'm not about to go drop some cash on parts that are only applicable to one race, or even ride. If I do it again I'll run the same stuff I do in every other race, but no tubulars in case of flats.

I've never had a problem with flats using tubulars (great, probably jinxed it now...). I'm going to be running XX this year. In the past years I used a 50/34x11-26, 53/38x11-28, and 53/39x11-28. This year will be a 53/39x11-32.

Nor have I... just a long way to drive to get a flat and drop out. Race leader from cat 3 did that 2 years ago...

This thread actually got me thinking. I had no idea Apex was so cheap. Maybe, just maybe, I'll grab some IF I do this stinkin' race again.

Is that a mistype or are you saying that everyone was so blown that was all it took to be in the thick of things?

After 5 hours of riding and at the end of 2+ hour climb, 3 W/kg is pretty damn impressive. I think I did maybe 2.5 at the end. And also consider that it is at elevation, which takes an edge off your FTP if you live & train at or near sea level.

No typo... last climbs were <3 W/kg. All climbs definitely under 4 W/kg. Altitude + lots of climbing wears on everyone... To give some perspective, at sea level I did similar rides (length and climbing-wise) with climbs at ~4.3-4.5 W/kg average. It's a tough race.

Oh yeah, considering that the P12 winner was <10% faster, it's probably safe to assume if you could do 3.3 or so W/kg, you'd be hanging with some of the best climbers.

I am still tossing the idea around of showing up. I guess maybe riding over 3 hours would be helpful?

Sorry for the data overload... Climbs in order from last year. IIRC I was like 12th in the 3s, pretty far down. I was passed by the leaders of the 4s who started behind me, and I think on the first day the leader of the 5s passed me as well.

Note that this year I've (but haven't checked recently) that the order of the first two climbs will be reversed.

My friends, last yrs 35+ masters winner, and my guess for this yrs Cat III winner have been up there training...hard. Better get to work guys!!! Good luck everyone! I can't wait to see the results. This is probably one of the toughest races in the West. I grew up in Bishop and Mammoth and these climbs are awesome!

Just training together. Maruico is a Cat 1, but will probably be doing the 35+ again.

Good luck man!

Do that a couple times a week and you're half way there. The big problem with EC is that it takes a ton of training and it's super late in the season. I know a few people who ruined half of the next season because they were still to burned out when it was time to start base in Oct/Nov.

Last winter, I was on an ergobike at the mammoth mountain inn (9k feet or so) and was doing just over 3 w/kg at what felt like threshold. The altitude really kills the power output, it's shocking.

My teammate Alfonso. He won last year AND 2008. I just spoke to him about it last weekend. He's been training like crazy to defend his title.

Too bad this isn't televised!

It would make the most boring TV imaginable. "Look, there's a rider! And he's suffering! <crickets for 10 minutes> And another rider! He looks miserable too! Wait, now he's getting off to puke!"

OTOH, that would be a way for me to see what happens at the front of the race.
