Pake Track / Soma Rush Frame Quality

Hello, I can't seem to find an answer on the forums about this, but has the Pake Steel Track frame always been Tange CroMo or was it cheaper steel when it first came out? I've read through the forums about this frame being heavy and that the Soma Rush would be a better frame to build with. Is this still the case? From each of their websites it looks like they are both tange CroMo. Is it worth the roughly 150 bucks more to get the Soma? I'm trying to keep my budget under 700 for the build. Thanks.

Not sure what an anchor weighs, but mine weighs around 4.7 pounds.

Both frames are great. The Pake is a little heavier.

Really you can't go wrong with either frame. If you were really worried about weight, you probably wouldn't be considering either frame anyway

Thanks for the responses, guys. I might just go with the Soma if I can scrounge up enough cash. Could anyone please review this build. I've basically just tooled around online and read people's suggestions. Am I missing anything? This will be my first full build (other than fixing up an old Miyata). Any area I can cut costs on? The prices are estimates from what I've seen online. Thanks.

Fork - Soma Track Threadless ($80) / Pake Track ($70)

are those the parts that you want?

It seems to be quite a bit of money but if you are able to spend it then all to you!

That will be a nice build, and most of the time, builds are expensive.

Maybe visit your LBS to possibly buy some used parts. Most of the time they have something that is nice and also cheap

Ha, yeah I guess I got a bit carried away... tends to happen when you're window shopping. Now I'm trying to cut costs where I can.

crosslakesales.com has the pake frame with no decals for $130 shipped. they only have 57cm & 59cm left in black only. but their selling some other sizes on ebay as auctions starting at $99 with $27 shipping. it is the exact same frame but with a slightly lamer looking fork. maybe look into that. it has the tange decal on the seattube.

For what it's worth, I am VERY pleased with my 2010 Pake.

Also, some of those black Pake frames on ebay are the older style w/ 1" steerer tubes.

The Pake' is a fine frame. I have one and it's been great. It's a street bike, FFS, not a velodrome machine. A lb. or two won't kill you.

Anyways, FYI, you can still build a sub-20lb. bike with it. Mine came in at just below 19. Pick out some decent components and you'll be alright.

Didn't some Soma frames have rear welding/alignment issues?

Im on my second Pake right now. My first one was 19lbs with pedals and my current one is a little heavier but its more townie build. I love them both. They ride/rode amazing for the price. I would not hesitate to buy another one if I was in the market.

first one. 19lbs 9oz with veeps even...

current one. a little heavier. not sure the exact number.

Not bashing Pake frames at all. In fact ran into the same problem as the OP in that I was deciding between these exact same frames.

folks that have multiple narrow tire capacity steel fixed gears are odd.

I am a fan of my straight fork. They are listed to run up to a 28c but I have heard people running larger.

I would totally buy that blue or black 2010 Pake frame. I need a new frame for my commuter replacement.
