Training Status??? (II)

i've done nothing but zone 2 base miles for the last three weeks, and for the last two days, my HR was through the roofs. It seems like i'm in overreaching mode & i'll take two days off. Anyone else have this happen to them?

EPIC day (for me)
100 miles
5h:35m
~1000 ft climbing
must..uncurl... hands
Hit a hell of a wall at about 75 miles - "she's got nothin left captain! "
Gonna hurt tomorrow I bet.

Final race of the season yesterday, followed by a team ride that started as a recovery ride then turned into a three-person hammer-fest.
Today, 4.5 hours with the team, which was surprisingly mellow but mellow for the guys is still a good workout for me. Came home and showered then went and played a game of touch football. I'm tired in a very pleasant way.
I'm getting stabbing pains in my head during hard efforts, and a serious headache after rides, so hopefully a few weeks of easy riding will help with that.

A combination of the shop ride getting cancelled, the crappy weather, and a lack of time (or so I thought) derailed my plans for a long day on the bike. I still managed 2 hours of tempo (184w), which is a really solid ride for me. I felt really strong, which was fun.

Turns out last week was my highest TSS score of the year. And it seemed like I really wasn't hitting it that hard. I'll do two more hard sets this week, mixed in with some couch intervals, and then Mt. Diablo on 10/3.
After that, I'm hanging up my bike except for commuting and easy rides with the kids.

50' at 323W. I didn't think I could do that. It was six laps in a local neighborhood. 323W for each of the first five laps and 325 for the last lap.
I've been riding long intervals by feel and using avg power on the display. I was hitting a new interval for each lap (no recovery). This is pacing feedback that works well for me.
Well, and my fitness is improving.
And it was only 76F.

Another rest day for me today. Aside from vacation, this is the first time I've had two days in a row off the bike since January.

I think I'm going to go for a ride on the old Ciocc today.

Thanks though, re: power. I think a confluence of factors are contributing to my power bump. No more Driveway crits means more training time on Thursdays. The re-addition of commutes to my daily routine is starting to add up, and the cooler temps are raising the ceiling a bit.

great weekend of riding in Vegas
on saturday only about 8 people showed up for the "unofficial" mt charleston hill climb. more of a group ride for the first half before we turned it up a little bit.
i "won", but wasnt the toughest field. still a fun ride and a great route. i hope the organizers get it back on track next year. i'd definitely come out for it again.
sunday i rode the river mountain trail (which continues to amaze me, every time i ride it). 40 hilly miles in the desert around las vegas, in upwards of 105 degree heat. brutal.
monday morning i got in a quick loop out at red rock. man the logistics would be tricky but that would be the best circuit race course in southern nevada. hard grinds early, a couple of poppers late and long straight finish. good stuff.
so yeah in 3 days i bagged all three of the classic vegas routes. not that theyre super challenging, but in that heat, it felt like an accomplishment. also rode out to the dam via the gravel spur off the river mtn trail. new overpass bridge is awesome.
i rented a caad9 for the weekend and loved it. definitely lives up to its rep as a great aluminum race bike.

2:30 of z2. I think I've got a cold coming on (sinus pain, runny nose, cough, whinge, whinge whinge), but it helped to get some exercise in. I didn't feel great on the bike, but decoupling was only 1.65%, which, if you're to believe mr. friel, is a really good sign that my aerobic fitness is good.

2 hours of all sorts of smashing myself into a wall. A bunch of 10' intervals, a few big gear intervals, and an hour of SST to finish up. 1987 kjoules in 2:01. Time for cake, nom nom nom.

Today is day 7 with this virus. I am still going through fever/"sweat like Bruce Pearl" cycles. (The "sweat" reference only makes sense to college basketball fans. For everyone else imagine a person in an advisory role in an athletic event that can totally sweat through a suit coat in an air-conditioned venue in 15 minutes. In the phrase "sweat like a pig" Bruce Pearl is a "pig".)
I really want to ride my bike but I am still "sick". By many painful experiences I know not to go riding with a virus. It is a "siren song" and sets you back.
At least my throat doesn't feel like I have been gargling sulfuric acid any more.

If you plan on riding the Horse Farm 100 slowly (say 5:20 or so clock time - that is 5:15 on the bike and 5 minutes to get water and grab some grub), let me know. That is my plan. Some conversation along the way will make it nicer.
I figure that paying my fee for the HFH is some kind of cosmic penance for a "sin" that I don't remember committing. Really I should get a life-time "pass" for this ride. Chandler agrees, BTW. (Very few on BF will know who Chandler is, but kensuf will know. Veloboy might know.) As for the HFH I single-handedly ran that thing (bought the food, handled the entries, painted the arrows, made the maps, dealt with folks for that owned the land for the rest stops, sent LAW (or whatever they are called now) Century patches to those that wanted them, organized the volunteers, rode the course a couple of days before to see if there were any issues, prayed for good weather, etc.) for a couple of years in the 1980's. I even rode "sweep" on a couple of them on my MTB to make sure that the last finisher wasn't the VERY last finisher.
BTW, riding sweep one year was one of my very favorite rides of all time. A female rider was struggling and her fiance was ready to give her an "out" about 20 miles from the end of the ride. He was on the side of the road with a car and the ability to load her bike. I convinced her to finish and she did. I'm sure that this changed the dynamic of the relationship in a way that helped her a lot. I think of this ride as my greatest "victory" on a bike.

Best feeling ride in a long time. I am in base mode and I took Monday & Tuesday off. The second I got on the bike today, I felt awesome and I had that feeling for the entire 30 miles. I'm starting to feel comfortable in the new shoes too. At the end of the ride, I decided to do my "last sprint of the season." I don't record my personal bests in one file, but, I think I hit my 1s, 5s and 10s records tonight at 1251, 1214, and 1143, respectively. It's gotta be the new shoes.

26 miles on an old steel Ciocc. No power, no HR, and dubious speed. It was nice. Dropped the chain to the inside up front three times and lost the ability to shift into the big ring about 30 minutes from home. No worries. Just a nice ride with no pressure. It felt weird wearing team kit on an old bike with a really laid back position -- bars and seat even height.
