Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Anyone not wear socks?

Rode home from work today, and forgot to pack my socks in the morning. I was pretty sure my feet would be killing me after my ride, but they weren't. Actually, it felt better than with socks. I guess more air was able to get to my feet and keep em nice and cool. When I used to run I would sometimes go sockless, but running shoes have a bit more cushion in them. I went 70 miles, and my feet felt better afterwards than the days I got 30 or 40.......Weird.

The only thing I'd think might happen is your shoes will stink like crazy after a while if you do this often.

I'm suprised that salt didn't build up on your feet and start rubbing. Did the improved breathing to your feet keep them from sweating?

Ditto. Prefer to extend the life of my foot gear investment as long as possible. If the sock-less look is your gig, there are low cut mesh options that are cool and virtually invisible.

Whatever floats your boat, though...

I tried it for the first time on tuesday and liked it a lot more cause my feet didn't sweat as much cause more air was flowin through and I felt like I had more room for my feet, from now on I ride with no socks.

I raced for five years without socks. Now, years later, I'm back on the bike and riding without socks again. Socks are great, but if you're picky, they can be a pain. Do what feels right; you'll ride more and enjoy it more, too.

sockless is for sprinters.

going sockless for an extended period WILL:

-make your shoes putrid
-destroy their internals
-shorten their useful life

sockless here.. except in the cold.. feels much better to me.. feet sweat less.. and I don't buy the idea that your shoes will rot without socks anyway.. with socks you are still wicking that sweat out of the sock and into the shoe anyway.. wearing socks keeps it from evaporating as quickly and generates more of it because of the added warmth.. im also not affraid to dip wash my shoes now and then.. heck i ride in enough rain with em anyway... still using the same pair of sidi road shoes for almost 20years now... they don't even stink... (to me anyway...lol)

But they come in so many cool colors and styles, you can't be a proper poseur without cycling socks!

When my riding shoes were all leather upper I went sockless just like with my old leather CCM Super Tacks. The leather becomes a part of your feet and you can't get blisters because nothing is rubbing. Now my newer bike shoes are more cloth that leather so I wear socks with them.
