Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Sub 1k mileage ate tires

Road conditions are so bad here, that I have less than 1000 miles on my rear rubber and its already pitted in 5 places with a pretty decent divot about the size of the width of a quarter. It's obviously not huge, but big enough that I can see the liner inside the rubber.

Anyhow, any good recommendations on tires?

For this season, I have swapped over to Schwalbe. I got good results from Vittoria tires the last two seasons, but they did not seem to last long, the rear good for about 1200 miles on good road. Rotating the front to the rear and putting a new tire on the front, I went through five tires in 2010.

Maybe the Durano Plus will give more road miles per tire.

Do your research. There are some very good tires on the market.

You oughta change your sig to "The journey of a thousand miles starts with new tires"

With that kind of mileage I'd start using whatever I could get for as cheap as possible. My condolences about the roads.

What size and brand are your tires?

Continental GP 4 Seasons (buy them from the UK for better prices). I got ~6000 miles on my last rear tire before it wore through to the cords. One puncture flat during that period. I ride on a lot of crappy roads too.

Michelin lithion 2. It's what came stock my CAAD9 5.

Friend, LBS wrench and fellow rider swears I need to invest in a pair of Vredestein Fortezza TriComps.

Any of the Conti GP series are good long wearing tires that perform at top-notch levels. I like the ride from my Pro 3 Races a little more, but seem to be getting far fewer miles out of them. For a slightly less expensive tire, I've run the Rubino line on a few bikes in the past and generally been happy with them except for in very poor road conditions (light mist on busy streets - no tires stick to that though)
