Thanks for the reminder.

I like that three hours later I was still able to register. :-)

How hard is this ride? In terms of Bay Area climbs, is it like doing Mt. Hamilton 5 times in a row or more like Hwy 9 or Montabello Rd.?

I might try to sing up during the second wave, if there will be any open spots.

If you don't get in to the DR, I highly recommend the Alta Alpina Challenge. Same roads plus other route options; equal or better support; and no lines for food, drink, and porta-pots.

https://www.altaalpina.org/challenge/

Having done both, I prefer the Alta Alpina ride.

Each year I've just done repeats on Diablo as prep and that's been fine...3 Diablo repeats from the North side and I'm ready for DeathRide. The climbs on the ride aren't too grueling when taken individually...it's usually just the time in saddle that gets to me. By the time I take the turn onto Carson for the 5th pass everything is usually pretty tired...back, hamstrings, feet, neck, etc.

Climb to Kaiser is the same date as Alta Alpina. Boo. 155 vs 200 miles. Heat vs potential snow.

Hey Bostic, been a long time. Actually, both can have either heat or potential snow. One of the years that I did Climb to Kaiser they had to shovel out the Kaiser Pass rest area due to snow at the summit.

Have you done the Alta Alpina 8-Pass? I was actually referring to the Alta Alpina 5-Pass Challenge route for anyone that missed the DR sign-up. Same climbs, but in a different order.

I'm not in this year, but I saw that they've added a few other changes to react to the no transfer policy. It seems that you can volunteer your way to a ride, and there will be a second registration opening up in March

Not as steep as Montabello, but longer climbs, higher altitude. 4 or 5 Montabello repeats will be good training. Descents are fast and fun.

+1, but let's not advertise heavily so we don't get the Death Ride crowds

Travelling again to the Sierras for DR # 2, after the Brastown Baldbuster, Assault on Mt. Mitchell, Mountains of Misery & 3 Mountain Madness quad in May - Early June. Had a blast last year, looking to shave some time this year.

Do Diablo three times from top to bottom, one more time from the Junction, then ride down the north gate and do the loop through Clayton and up Morgan Territory, then back to the bottom at South Gate. That's pretty close, except for altitude. To simulate that stuff a rag in your mouth.

Popping the thread back to the top.

I followed ericm's advice to success (well, didn't do Morgan Territory) and finished the Alta Alpina 8 passes on my recumbent.

I've got a ticket for the Death Ride (it was my backup for the AA), but don't really want to drive up the day before to pick it up (I didn't read the fine print that said you had to inform them in writing to pick up on Saturday morning). Anyone know exactly how they'll enforce the no transfer? I was thinking I could go up Friday for a leisurely ride and transfer the ticket then, but wouldn't want the rider getting their ID checked sometime later.

Hey guys - I know this is super last minute, but does anyone have room for one more to camp and/or stay this Friday + Saturday night? My buddy who I had been planning on staying with for 4+ months called me this morning, flaking on me and telling me that he decided not to go to his cabin this weekend

I'm a 25-year-old college student, but I could certainly chip in some cash for anyone who helps me out! Thanks everyone in advance!

Exactly! And, you need to add in the heat as well. Bring plenty of Gatoraide or some other electrolyte replacement, not just water. I've seen one seriously screwed up rider from drinking only water on this ride.

Not having ridden it myself, but talking with a couple folks about it, it sounds like lots of people camp in the parking lot next to their cars the night before. That was my plan anyways -- bring a small 2-man tent and set it up under my open hatchback.

I know for Alta Alpina they said the sheriff would not allow anyone to sleep in their car in the parking lot the night before (same parking lot), but maybe the sheer size of the Death Ride and accommodating all the riders doesn't make that practical.

You have a much better option than the parking lot. About 100 yards before the Turtle Creek entrance there's a road to the left than goes to the airstrip. There's a BLM campground a quarter mile past the airstrip along a lake/reservoir. There's no reservation, it's first come first served. I had no problem finding a campsite the two times I rode the DR. If it's full you can ask trailer campers to use their tent pad. The cost is $10 or $15 a night. The huge bonus is the hot showers on site with no waiting line. Second bonus... it's quiet so you will get a good night sleep something I doubt you can have along the road where so many people camp.

Was there a packet mailed to registered riders this year? Or do we just show up at TRP tomorrow and pick everything up?
