When I was in college I salmoned for a couple of months. It was only for 1 mile on a 5 mi trip from the college to work. The problem was to be legal I needed to cross a major street, ride the mile and recross. What a drag!
Well, every day was an adventure in near misses. Of course I'm blasting down the sidewalk the wrong way. The drivers never see me until it is too late. The inevitable finally happened. Fortunately I was unhurt. Not so with my bike.
After that another student showed me a study done by the city of Tempe analyzing bicycle accidents and deaths. That was an eye opener for me. For the rest of my college/work career there I crossed and recrossed the street legally.
I won't tell you I never salmon nowadays. But it rarer than a blue moon, never a good idea, and I know who's fault the inevitable accident is. Really the exercise of riding a little further is better than the risk.

There seems to be a lot of confusion, and it's almost entirely localized to this one web forum. This is supposed to be the commuting forum, not the confused forum. So, in an attempt to clear things up...
These are salmon:
These are cyclists:
You can tell them apart because one group is of fish who swim in the water, and the other are humans who ride bikes.

Since we all are being super rightous here!! Might as well go all the way...
I think the OBVIOUS in this picture is about 30 TIMES worst than running a RED LIGHT and RIDING the wrong way on a street/road..
Not going to say what it is, but it is very, very OBVIOUS.
