Hi everyone.

I'm building up a Tarmac SL3 for next year's racing season, and I'm in a bit of a pickle. For junior racing, I can not have any higher than a 52t big chainring. I would also prefer to have a 36t small chainring to still be efficient on the climbs. So basically, I'm looking for a 110bcd 52/36 crankset, or just a good 110bcd crankset that I can put rings on (Red does offer some, so that is a possibility).

The problem is that 7900 (which I will be putting on the rest of the bike) does not offer a 52t ring for a 110bcd crank. I'm not sure if it would make any sense to pay the premium for a 7900 crank if I couldn't use the rings.

I understand that Red offers an option like this, and I might have to suck it up and just go with it, but I would prefer to keep SRAM out of the equation for now. I liked Specialized's offering, but I have an English threaded BB so BB30 is not an option.

So bikeforums, I'm wondering what you use and if you could give me any tips for cranksets. I'd like to keep it under the cost of a 7900 crank, which shouldn't be too hard.

On par quality-wise with the Dura Ace 7900 pro crankset, there is the FC 7950 "compact" crankset with 34/50 teeth, Google shows online prices at $350+. Like the FC 7900 crankset, it also needs a HollowTech II bottom bracket, ~$30+.

Will 34/50 teeth chainrings will be adequate? You might want to see a graphical gear calculator website, such as:

- just drag the chainrings and sprockets to your proposed setup, pick the desired cadence and tire size, and see if it works for your applications.

Why do the rules state you can't run a standard 53T?

If I used a 53t, the rollout for one revolution of the crankset would be over 26', the maximum limit for one revolution. 52 x 14 as the largest gear gives a perfect 26' rollout, which is why it is desired by junior racers. If I used a 53t, I would have to move up to a 15t in the rear, and it would end up being very close to the 50 x 14 as far as rollout is concerned.

To Suburban Grind, I used a 50/34 last year on my bike and the races I did were sometimes way too fast for a 50 x 14 as the largest gear. I would also be out of any sprint in any race unless it was uphill because of the really small ratio.

I'm looking at Fairwheel Bikes crankset tests and I do like the Extralite QRC and the Lightning SL cranksets they offer.

Alright, problem solved. Went to the LBS and they suggested that I go with a 52/39 and mix my junior cassette with a 11-28 and take the 21, 24, and 28t cogs off of the spare cassette and throw it on the junior cassette.
