Looking for a bike, and I think the kind I want is a Mountain Bike. HELP ME DECIDE!

Hi,
I am looking for a bike I can ride. I live in the suburbs, and the road to town is quite bumpy. The sidewalks are "slates" of rock, some thick and some small. There are lots of cracks and with a regular bike, I wouldn't be able to ride. It is very bumpy, and I cant ride over those bumps.
I am looking for a bike which can ride onto sidewalks from the street (Riding literally onto the curb) without hurting myself. I would also like a bike which can withstand 2-4 inch bumps on the sidewalk. It should be able to be ridden on grass, and shouldn't hurt too much when riding. I am 5"6, and 135 pounds. I don't want to stand while I am riding. If any of you can reccomend a bike, that would be great. I am looking for a mens bike. Thanks,
Jake

Look at downhill mountain bikes. They should have enough travel for the types of hits you're planning.

Welcome To Bike Forums, Mr.Rhee!

Yes, you definitely want a HT MTB!

I will be more than happy to make a few recommendations, if you'd just give me the upper limit of your budget.

If the budget is any less than $3000, there is no bike that will hold up to the level of abuse described.

a Trek 3500 should be perfect for what you want.

if you want to take junkyard's advice, and you should consider it, the guy knows his stuff, look at a rocky mountain slayer 70.
