I had no idea Shamals were so heavy.

16 HPW rims are good, but keep in mind, the 16 spokes (same goes for first gen cosmic carbones) don't take too well to heavier riders.

I was 180lbs and sprinted hard enough to pull my rear wheel out of true... spoke pulled thru and collapsed the rim.

They're heavy and weak and I think they look ridiculous on vintage bikes. I don't think I want those.

I had a very nice set of HPW-16 Ventos. I liked them a lot.
However, a Taiwan buyer liked them $378 worth.

That $378 bought:
8-sp Eurus wheelset.
10-sp Vento G3 Reaction wheelset
10-sp Eurus G3 wheelset

Of course, they were great deals, but I didn't need to think twice about the bike kharma for the timing on those.

I see the uber aero statement with the Shamals, but It does affect the aesthetics quite a bit as the wheels look visually heavy......and they are heavy....
I could only go as far as Wolber Profil 20's on my C&V bikes, when it comes to aero wheel bling. Deeper just does not look right on them. Now if I had one of those C&V bikes with aero section frame tubes, then, it might be something I could consider.

I chose Shamals when I built my Pinarello back in late 2000. Maybe not the lightest wheel but I noticed the aerodynamic differences immediately when compared to my former rider ('88 Pana DX-5000). They have been bomb-proof for nearly 12 years now over the rough roads in both northern Iowa as well as here in the Twin Cities. I love 'em and not once have I regretted choosing them for the Pinarello.

I disagree, I have shamals, ventos and Atlantas. They are very stable and I beloved they enhance the look of your bike greatly if you're going for the modern look. I love the way they look on my Bianchi Celeste. And my pinarello Montello will get a set as well.

This is like my dream bike. The frame, stem, bars, seatpost, ergos, and wheelset are perfect.

The only way to make it better would be record ultra torque cranks and the late carbon caged record titanium 10 derailleurs. I would love to see this in person sometime. I am in central Iowa and my wife and I visit the twin cities every month or two.

agreed completely.

the rims have a place and look smashing on the right build.

they are the most stable wheel I had ever ridden, but also the heaviest. In fact, they are so stable that cornering with them is kinda weird at first.

remember tho, they are pretty light in comparison to the all aluminum 42mm aero wheels that are coming out today.. so I think that says a lot!

FWIW i liked the cosmic carbones 16spoke versions better, as they felt nicer riding, superior cornering, were just as aero and much lighter at the rim - but they had an inferior spoke attachment at the rim. The 20 spoke versions I heard were stronger.

my shamals and me on the far right:

they scream speed and maintain their speed like its no ones business.

getting them up to speed is an entirely different question.

Well, when I decided to break down and buy a modern bike I decided to go for my dream Italian racer. With budget constraints thrown out the window I went ahead and got whatever I wanted. I looked at many frame options but once I settled on the Italian I knew it was going to be Campagnolo Record or nothing. The only thing I wish I had was the first generation carbon crank (period correct) but it came out shortly after I built the bike. I opted to steer clear of tubulars since I had never owned any before and didn't want to have the hassle involved with changing them. I had actually planned on buying a second set of light weight wheels shortly after the bike was done but started riding and sort of forgot about it.

I love my Panasonic bicycles too but this little Italian really inspires me each time I ride. It somehow manages to give me that little burst of sheer excitement that I remember feeling as an 11 year old kid getting my first '85 Panasonic Team road bike. It may be modern but it has a nostalgic flame in there somewhere. ;-)

Let me know if you're going to be in the Cities and perhaps you can check it out up close.

Took a ride on the d' Arienzo-Basso with Ventos today. 20 mile round trip. 20 mph headwind going out with 30 mph gust. Barely was able to average 13.7 mph. On return trip with tailwind raised avg. mph 13.7 to 15.8. Pretty big jump in avg. speed. Was fun to use the wind and wheel weight to my advantage.
