Has anyone every seen one of these large frames set up correctly? 99 times out of 100, they seat is slammed all the way down.

Seems like the 70's was a hayday for selling over-sized bikes.

Sold a 27 inch 1984 Fuji Del Rey to another forum member (~ 69cm).

27 inch frames were available in a couple Panasonic and Panasonic-built Schwinns back in the '70's. I'm 6-foot-4, and I rode a 25" frame. The extra-large frames cost extra:

There's a classic Panasonic ad that features a basketball player finally getting a bike to fit him. I'd find it and link to it, but Youtube is blocked at work.

Used the PICS system on a couple of occasions, fitting bikes to a couple of the Denver Nuggets. It was a handy sales tool, and helped sell
about a ½ dozen bikes to those guys. Back then they played pretty well, too!

I worked in a bike shop in the 70's that was a Panasonic dealer; we'd usually have one of these monster bikes on the floor. Any guy at 6'0"+ , and any guy buying a bike for a 16 year old son that he thought even had one inch of growth left in him, wanted to get one. It took a lot of sales tact to deal with 5'8" "urban types" coming out from the city, seeing it in the shop and insisting on buying it like it would somehow make them taller.

It wasn't as extreme, but my friend bought a 64cm Panasonic new off the floor in the late 80's when he was around 14 years old. The guy is 5'-10" NOW! He was shorter back then. I can't imagine why they sold him that bike when he needed something like a 56cm, or maybe smaller depending on how tall he was at age 14.

In 1979, the Panasonic DX2000 was available in 20, 22, 24, 26, and 28". I sold a 28" one to a customer, who actually needed it. He was, of course, very tall. 28" equals 71 cm.

I bought my 64cm Kobe Capri when I was 12 years old and just getting over 6'. I did not know back then that they made frames bigger than that. That was in the mid 70's and I don't think many were made. For some reason the 80's came and everyone had a 27" frame. Lotus, Panasonic,Fuji, Schwinn, Miyata and my favorite, this Bridgestone.

I feel like my Panasonic is setup pretty right. Mine's a 27" (68cm) and fits me just fine:

Agt 6' 3-1/2", but with funny proportions (Long legs, shortish torso, broad shoulders and short arms), I've test-ridden a couple 67/68cm frames belonging to friends. They fit quite well if I slam the seatpost, and I'm always on the lookout for one with good tubing and clean paint. I'd like a French-fit bike.
