Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Thanks all, hope to ride it soon and report. Now for some full disclosure....
I'm waiting on some clearance from my doc to ride again - the real reason for the month (or two wait).
I ride about 4-7K miles/year, these last several years, but I hurt my knee in July and pretty much stopped riding. I've done about 200 miles since July and in pain.
Just couldn't resist the urge to buy, always wanted a cool BMC with the innovative frame designs, Di2 is wonderful for a guy who started on friction shifters.
But I don't know what the future holds for my cycling....we'll see.

Keep the chain catcher if you have it. I have Di2, DA and Ultegra, on two bikes, and have dropped the chain occasionally on both of them.

Yeah, this. I can probably count on one hand the number of times I've dropped my chain.

I have SRAM, Rival level, and I run a K-Edge catcher just as a precaution, no drops yet, thankfully and the CAAD frame isn't as sensitive as a CF frame to damage a chain would do but it is a worry anyway.

Nice bike, a friend wants one badly but he had surgery last month and he has a son starting dental school soon. Hope he can pick up one like you did. Sorry to hear you had the knee problems, you haven't been posting as much recently and I wondered if you were okay. Hope you get the clearance to ride soon.

Bill

It's not really an issue now that I got rid of SRAM. One time on a crappy dirt road descent is understandable.

None of my IGH bikes have ever dropped the chain. That's the risk of using a derailleur, correct?

I'm on previous gen dura ace di2 and have never experienced a single chain drop. I once had a mechanical da rear derailleur torn off.

Wasn't Schleck using SRAM Red with a k-edge chain catcher during his now infamous chain drop? Any system will throw a chain when not properly tuned.

I thought the point of a chain catcher is to prevent frame damage, not stop a chain from dropping under any circumstance.

Great ride man. I was looking at this bike all weekend on Competitive and they had a great price on it at just under $2500. I dicked around too long and the price went up to $2900 yesterday. Poop.

Now you can ride like one those pros in the tight shorts like Lance Armstrong!

Congratulations!

Thanks Bill for your concern. Yes I've hardly been posting here of late. Will hopefully pick it up this year (well definitely not like pcad or anything)

Thanks but Trek with full US Postal kit is just not going to happen; although I was tempted to buy an older BMC in full Phonak livery a while ago when they were practically giving those things away for some reason...

My 105 compact dropped a couple times but the 53/39 105 never has and has 10x the miles. Compacts are just goofy.

yeah compacts are definitely not quite as refined as standards. The 16t jump is a big one to swallow.

Well finally assembled the bike! Took about 5 months, was a lot of hard work but succeeded in the end
Still needs Carbon cages, Deda 140 stem, Garmin 800...

Seems well packed by Competitive...

A chance to own Di2 for the first time...

Must have the now mandatory chain catcher for carbon stays...

And of course well rounded Deda deep drops...
Please forgive my ignorance, but what is a chain catcher and who demnds it. Never heard of it.

It's that red thing in the middle of the 4th photo. Keeps the chain from shifting off the small chainring and damaging your frame.

The little red thingy to catch the chain which will inevitably drop sometime and jam and trash that precious carbon, even the pros use it in races like Roubaix. Although Di2 is supposed to handle chain drop better, no guarantees.

You can drop your chain if you shift in rough stuff of, sometimes, if you are double shifting and the chain gets to bouncing. This can happen on any system from time to time.

You just need to learn how to soft pedal it back n the big ring when it does.

Chain catchers are cheap insurance. They make perfect sense.
