I'm still on the fence about what my setup will be, but I have time. Still gathering a few final parts etc. I did snap a few pics of the frame with Albatross bars upright right after using about a whole dang bottle of nail polish to touch her up. I don't want to cut these bars and I am not sure I like the look at them flipped compared to regular drops. We shall see.

Flip them, chop them about 1", acquire babes. That's how it goes.

Seriously though, Northroads have a very similar profile and in my (worthless) opinion are among the best looking handlebar out there if you flip them and trim them a bit.

Mmm... Stumpjumper Bi-plane fork

Mmm... Monopolowa Vodka, a true potato vodka from Austria (originally from Poland)

Two of my favorite things!!!

Oh, I totally agree with Seely, flip those bars over (even if you don't want to cut them)! In the upright position, the bars look like the love child of a tweedy hipster and an old man neighborhood cruiser... it hurts my eyes to see that sey up on a beautiful early Stumpjumper!

I have a set of Northroads that I am going to try this with. Originally I was planning on using a mustache bar but a mock set up made me realize why they are sitting on the shelf after the first time I used them. Any feeling of control is gone and they are much wider than the Northroads making it feel like I am steering with a golf club.

I do like that! Could I run thumb shifters and regular flat bar brake levers with a setup like that? I mean I know I can, but will it work?

I've been looking for an early 80's Stumpy that fits.

Bars, definitely drops.

A lot of great ideas here.

I *wish* that was mine. Sadly, its just a reference picture I dug up on a Google image search. My High Plains will have to do until I find my lugged, bi-plane crown beauty in the biggest size possible.

Damn, that looks awesome. You've convinced me; I'm off to the co-op to see what they have in the used section.

you could ask niagara on their site. they are usually pretty good about answering that type of question though it might take a day or 2

It's been a little while since I've researched this, but I am 95% sure they don't take barends. Most alloy bars (other than drop/moustache) have an ID too small for barends. The steel Wald northroad style bars - 8095 - will fit barends, according to my memory and a post here. Some of the alloy bars by Nitto and Soma are designed to fit barends. As for road brake levers, I believe you would need to use a shim on any of these.

So, I'm finally ready to join the party. This is my Specialized Stumpjumper Sport.

Before:

This bike is kind of an odd duck. Despite being a Stumpjumper "Sport", the frame has a "Made in Japan" sticker. This bike was originally sold and ridden in Colorado, and it had apparently seen many well-earned miles. There was so much chain slap that about 50% of the paint on the underside of the drive-side chainstay was gone.

Here's what I've done to it since I got it:

The bars and cable hanger were from my local co-op, and the shifters are a combination of Shimano 105 downtube shifters and Rivendell's Silver shifter pods. All the aluminum was hand polished (which I will never do again, so help me).

They do have a randonneur bend, but I have no idea who made them. I couldn't find any markings anywhere.

Sooooo, do 650's fit on just about any 26" mountain bike then, or has this individual done some serious mods??

My guess is you would have MUCH better luck fitting 650B wheels in an older, rather than newer, 26" MTB frame. The longer the wheelbase, the better the clearance.

Okay, does this bike have front U brake mounts or not? It looks like the studs have been removed and a caliper brake has been installed. Why would they use a rear u brake and a front caliper from the factory? That would make no sense. At first I thought it was a side-cabled U brake of BMX origin.

Question, is the Alpina-D by IRD front derailleur the best front derailleur to use when you want to use a mountain bike crankset with road shifters? Just thinking about possiibly buying one for my rock hopper project.

I missed that debate earlier in the thread, beg pardon. You're correct in that it did have u-brake studs front and rear (though it probably came with roller cam brakes originally.) when my friend bought it, the front studs had already been hacked down to little nubs, so we added the BMX caliper.

Have you had any luck identifying your frame?

It probably originally had a roller-cam/u-brake in the front too. It looks like I can still see the mounts above the rim (u-brake and rollercams had canti-style mounts but above instead of below the rim), but I can't tell if that current brake is using them or not. It may just be a replacement caliper using the fork crown hole.

Edit: nevermind, posted at the same time as Chris
