I only have 1 waterbottle - how to breed?
I am getting back into cycling seriously to lose weight, two hours a day as a minimum goal if the weather ever breaks. Daytime highs have been 10 to 20 degrees below normal since beginning of March.
Enough of the rant. I don’t know how many water bottles that I bought in previous incarnation. Not many; they were often obtained free at cycling events as advertising freebies, as part of an entry fee, or picked up from discarded bottles at bike races. They tended to be a little like coat hangers or tribbles. Put two into a closet and there’s a new litter the next time you look.
I got rid of a bunch when I was moving and currently only have one water bottle. I was a bit shocked to price them now that I may actually have to buy some. North of $5.00 seems to be typical.
So, I am curious. If you’re (sic - not a typo for “your”) active in organized cycling (racing, centuries, fund raisers, et. al.) what portion of your bottles to you actually buy?

I have a couple of camelbak podium chill bottles. I don't really have a need for more than that right now.

Get a couple of Camelbak podium bottles. They will sing for you throughout the day. Maybe even a duet.

I purchase Podium bottles. The rest come from events. You already know the recipe for successful bottle breeding, enter some events.

I've been using the same two Camelback podium big chill bottles since I first bought them a year ago. They've been through a lot and one of them is starting to leak at the valve. Will most likely buy another of the same to replace. I don't like the pop open tops (well, I've gotten too used to the Camelback) so all those bottles end up piled in the closet.

I have a pile of awful free ones from events, that almost never get used.
Most of the time I use elite bottles and cages. Incredibly the good stuff costs money.

Plenty of them to be found in the wild as well as the home-bred variety. A good habitat for the wild ones seems to be next to roadsides on fast downhills with a few potholes. Even better is just before the last steep climb on a recently used race route.

Zero. I get 4 team bottles a year, plus I pick up a zillion of them at the race series we put on each year. Oh, and Bike to Work Day is usually good for another handful.

I dont mind paying of a good bottle. It carries my water, my energy and keeps me alive. $30 per year is not to much to ask for the heaviest and most important thing you strap on your bike.

I wouldn't use a free bottle unless it was insulated. I'm not going back to warm water.

I don't ride in events...but I'd imagine that the bottles they give away are the cheapest sub-$3 pieces-of-guano that taste like plastic and insulate about as good as gauze....

I visit a lot of random shops. I try and buy something at every one. Often a bottle is the easiest, most unique and least expensive item to purchase that I know I'll use.

Have a closet full of freebies and they can rot in there for all I care or the kids can use them. Unless they start giving away camel back chills I'll be buying them.

I have 20+ bottles. I only bought 2 insulated Camelbak bottles to keep my water from freezing in the winter. All the others were from my Team, shop, races. I only keep the ones made by Specialized though, they're really the only bottles I like
