We did 55.6 miles on the tandem today. Bedford to Pepperell following a GPS route, mostly new roads for us.

Not being able to go out riding or running for 6 days because of the terrible rain overhere, I HAD to go out today. Luckily it stayed dry for awhile. Not the nicest wheather but hey; you cannot be too pickey this autumn.
Went out on my latest adition, my vintage Diamant... not the best decision I was soon to find out. I lowered the saddle an inch and a half this morning and that turned out to be too much.
After some miles my knees hurt, my hips hurt and I was struggling to try to get into my usual cadance. During the ride the pain in knees and hips went away; that's a plus.

So, only did (exactely) one hour and managed to do 16.2 miles with an average of 16.2 mile not that bad considering I didn't have the feeling I was doing okay for one moment.

Next rides wil be on my other vintage bike; my Peugeot, the bike that fits me like a glove.
Hopefully the weather stays nice so I won't have to wait this long again before being able to do more miles cycling.

Did the Sonoma Backroads metric century. Rode on a few of the roads that the Amgen Tour will be taking tomorrow. I think they might go a little faster than I did. Beautiful day, not too hot, but picked up a nasty headwind on highway 1 heading north.

Bee-you-ti-ful day today in the Santa Monicas. Started on Pacific Coast Highway, rode to meet some friends coming the other way on Mulholland, then did a bunch of climbing. Perfect weather ... perfect company ... perfect burger for lunch. Yum

Did the first half (plus an extra 5) of the CASA ride in Shepherdstown. Saw Neil_B briefly at the start, and another guy I keep running into at these events. Nice, cool morning. Rain held off thankfully. I would have done the whole ride, but I'm "saving" myself for the "Storming of Thunder Ridge" ride on Sunday.

I have a busy schedule today but put in 45 minutes on the trainer this AM. Rain, rain, rain. Tomorrow, I'll be on the trainer again(and likely Tuesday) as the rain isn't supposed to subside(off and on and thunderstorms). I don't think I'll get an actual ride on the street until Wednesday.

27 miles with Sky Ride Transpenine Route to Lymm.

Fast ride today 15 mph average (MTB's) on dirt trails then road.

Ride has been slated in the past for being too slow, the last time there was a very strong winter headwind and quite slow riders.

Course it doesnt help when there are anti-motorbike and car barriers at regular intervals along the trail esp when 27 or so riders need to get through them, this can hold rides up a lot, but today we got through them quite quickly.

Another bonus was another rider said I must have been doing some serious training through the winter as I was looking much trimmer and was much fitter than when he saw me last summer on the same ride.

So all the Social Rides and the fact that I am car free and have to ride to all the Ride Venues and back have paid off.

When we leave our rest stop in Lymm Centre there is a short but steep climb up to the main road which I struggled up last time and got well left behind but this time I rode all the way up and was at the head of the ride most of the way.

I think I saw Neil_B at one point in time but the group I was with was getting along with the program at that point in time. Was kinda a blur.

Thunder Ridge being MoM? I'm going to give that a shot.

Did 17 miles of a scheduled 30 mile club ride this morning. Had to cut the ride short after a 3 bike crash when some driver tried to pass us around a curve and noticed there was a car in the lane she was passing in. One rider did a panic stop and the two riders behind him had nowhere to go, so the three went down. No major injuries other than some road rash, scrapped up shifters and handlebars and a very broken (in three places) helmet. It's times like this when you are glad to be riding sweep. BTW, after the driver of the SUV saw the bikes go down, she sped up and got the hell outa' Dodge.

Nice relatively early am ride: 47 miles, 2300 ft of climbing. Work has really impacted my riding, but I'm going about fixing that. We have been able to ride 4 100K on the tandem and I've riding one difficult (for me) 100K, the Primavera. so we're scrapping by with very marginal mileage, but enjoying the riding we are able to fit it.

Duh!
On Friday I rode part of the D&R Canal path, from Washington Crossing to Stockton and back, 22 miles round trip -it was great.
We were pretty much back, but had to make a very sharp U-turn as the path is elevated above the parking lot. As I did so, going very slowly of course, I somehow lost control, went over to the left and crashed forehead/face first in to a wood railing (knocking out the rail from the post).
2 hours later I was in the emergency room with a terrible headache - turns out I did fracture my nose and have a nasty bruise both on the bridge of my nose, and another under the right eye. Also have soreness around the right eye. CAT scan and x-ray revealed no other fracture.

Fortunately weather here has been lousy yesterday and today, so obviously no riding (my son would kill me!), but tghis afternoon noticed that I am feeling somewhat better.

I thik I'd be less aggravated if I had been doing something stupid like making a turn too fast, going downhill too fast, etc. For this?!!

Also, I realized that my low speed, i.e. near a stop, balance is not the best. Also, I can not ride hands free -of course I have no need to, but the couple of times I made a half-ass effort I felt very unstable/ wobbly.

Oh well, hopefully I'll be back on the bike by Tuesday.

After yesterday's 55.6 hilly miles today was supposed to be a recovery ride. Yeah, fat chance. 37.7 on the tandem.

In Concord: (Yeah, I know, by Old World standards this isn't old, but by US standards it certainly is historically significant.)

Did the intermediate 44.5 miles of the Tour de Madison in VA on Saturday. Started out dry, but cool mist eventually turned to rain. Nice, rolling hills of Madison County. Too bad the rain and fog occluded the views. Finished in just over 2.5 hours, and felt great. Slowed it down a bit later in the course as the roads got a bit slick for those 23mm tires. But....the Di2 is great! Next year I'll do the metric.....

Got in an event ride before the tornadoes hit today. We did 66 miles on what was supposed to be a Metric Century. Yah, Kansans aren't that good with the metric system. The weather was good except for the 21 mph SE winds with 30 mph gust. Add to that the fact that the first 30 or so miles were all down wind. Once we got to the far point we knew the work was about to begin. I never managed to hook up with anyone for a paceline for more than about 1/4 mile. Either they blew me off or I would take a pull and check back and find that they had dropped off. So it was mostly a solo Metric Century.

I have been relaxing for a while and about 3:30 the weather service people started going nuts. For a while they were predicting a large tornado about 10 miles out heading straight for my house. Somewhere about 5 miles out it sounds like it took a right turn and missed my neighborhood. I haven't heard any reports of damage around town other than downed power poles. Hopefully the property damage around town is minimal. Since I live in the middle of tornado alley this is something I have to expect every spring and early summer.

Friday was Bike to Work day in Wichita. I was off work but was out on the MTB doing errands and such. Event organizers offered juice and donuts for breakfast on about a half dozen bike trails around town. I managed to get my glycemic spike in fine style and then work some of it off with about 10 miles on the bike paths. I put in another 10 miles with stops for the free lunch catered by Jimmy John's restaurants in Old Town and hit the local bike shop for a few bits for the road bike.

Saturday was an easy 20 miles as a warm up for the Metric Century.

So in the end I am safe, the house is intact but my legs are shredded. About as good an outcome as I could have hoped for!
