Back wheel spindle is much lomger than rear fork width, help needed.
I have just fitted some new wheels to an old British frame. The rear wheel is a flipflop wheel with overall spindle width of 170mm, the rear forks are 120mm.
The threaded part of the spindle is 25mm, the dropouts are 4mm thick, and the wheel nut is 10mm. So when the wheelnuts are tightened there is approx 10mm of thread outside the nut.
Is this normal?

So is it the dropout thickness that is less than on modern frames, or the treaded part of the spindle that is longer than normal at 25mm?
I'm wondering about grinding down the excess, but then i may have problems with these wheels on another frame if it is the dropout thickness that is causing the problem.

Your cog is slipping.
Modern track dropouts are typically between 5-8mm.
A lot of track hubs come with a longer axle to accommodate spacers when used on older road frames spaced at 126 or 130mm.
