Chris Froome Elliptical Chain Rings
Looked like Chris Froome was running elliptical chain rings yesterday when he demolished the GC field. I thought Quintana was going to run away with it but Richie Porte and Froome were unbelievably strong (perhaps a bit too strong) and obliterated pretty much the entire GC filed. Also noticed he had a very high (Lance like) cadence. Anyone recently experimented with elliptical chain rings? Would imagine elliptical rings would not work for TT stages but Froome's #s yesterday were impressive and wondering whether anyone had success with elliptical chain rings.

It seems he does. That said, Wiggins has gone back to round rings, so I dunno.
For me, I've got one on a CX/city bike, and I can't say I notice a huge difference.

Would live to try them but imagine they had VERY little to do with Froom's performance.

Those are O-Symetric rings, and apparently a few pros are using them...just looking at them makes my knees feel funny.

I posted this in pro cycling for the fans.

And a Sheldon Brown link

If it does translate to an increase in effective application of aerobic power, then it makes sense that Froome would use it and his cadence and pedaling style are likely optimized for that effectiveness and in particular on steady state climbs.
