SR Crank Arms and Chain Rings Obsolete
Looking for 86mm BCD SR Apex or SR Custom crank set, 170mm arm length. These were made 1980 both triple and double. Marked now in the crib sheets as obsolete but are fine road crank sets with single bolt sets. Stronglight 107 is very similar. The SR Apex triple was stock on the 1981 Miyata 1000, 52-47-34 tooth. JIS or ISO taper?? Aren't close enough the same? The SR Custom I have has worn out taper so I want to replace the spider, the whole set, or figure out some repair. Any help?

And the SR custom...I like the look of these cranks.
You'll just have to look for a set or post an ISO and offer up something in trade or subscribe to BF and place a WTB ad for cash. There were a lot of these made and they're still out there. I guess you let the crankarm bolt get loose and continue to ride? tsk tsk
I wouldn't worry about the ISO/JIS taper until I found one.

Very nice -- I am a rabid fan of half step plus granny or 1.5-step plus granny.

Oh yea, l like those cranks as well ... Hoping to find a replacement .. I bought the Custom used so don't know how many times it had been torqued on and take off ... I mounted it on a new spindle with new bearings. I probably rode it 300 miles before it got loose. Your guess may be accurate. My first inclination was to tighten the BB which seemed to make the fix for a week or so. Finally hit me over he head but by then torquing the bolt just drove the granny ring into the frame. Live and learn ...

I prefer Suginos myself. I have one of these beauties(drive side only, but no big deal), and I can't wait to find a touring frame once again, to use it.,,,,BD

The nice thing about the Sugino AT is that you can still get chainrings for it. The outer and middle positions use standard 110mm BCD, and the inner is standard 74mm BCD.

Did the AT introduce the 110 (and 74) BCD, or was it just the first successful crank to use it? I love how Sugino cranks looked at that time period.

I have a VG condition Apex double like that, in 170, with 52t/42t rings. I doubt if I'll be using it now, since I got a nice Campy Gran Sport crankset, so I'd swap for something cool, if you're interested. If so, just PM me a trade offer. In case this post is inappropriate, it's unintentional, & mods, feel free to delete this post, if needed.

I need a road triple really bad where I live. My bikes have SR/Sakae doubles, an Apex, CX and SX. Nice to know there are road/racing triples for these beautiful square tapers.

Jury rig chainring
My brother has a 1981 Miyata 1000 with the SR Apex 86bcd crank in HS+G 52/47/34t gearing and 14-28 5sp FW. Man that low gearing for touring was SO HIGH back in the day, 34/28 is common on RACING BIKES today, with many cyclists gearing down even further to 34/32 or 34/34 1:1 ratio or EVEN a 36t-42t cassette for Clydes. I downgeared his Miyata with a 14/17/21/26/32 5sp Suntour FW, kept the same 47/52t chainrings for perfect half step gearing and jury rigged a standard 28t 74bcd chainring widening the 5 bolt holes from 74 to 86bcd with some time consuming careful dremeling and filing. The inner ring looks a tad funky but if done right it holds onto the crank and spins round just fine. Trying to find a 86bcd 5 hole chainring even on Ebay is near impossible. I also hooked up vintage suntour barend ratchet shifters to replace the stock ratchet DT shifters and put a black Brooks B17 saddle on and relaced the stock wheels with 14g DT Swiss spokes and nipples. Those 40 spoke rear wheels in 120mm are VERY RARE so well worth it. It's hanging in his apt. on my custom made oak bike stand as wall art mostly now, though we do ride it sometimes.

Interesting thread, but I'm still confused by one of the words in the title. "Obsolete?" What does that even mean? Is it a real word?
Many here already know this, but if you have a functional 86 bcd crank, you can buy matching new Stronglight chainrings from Spa Cycles in the UK. They have an e-commerce web site, and prices are reasonable. They're out of some tooth counts from time to time, but they're generally very well supplied.

Obsolete to many = not for sale at Amazon, or = not available at my LBS (through QBP catalog).

It's like saying 27" wheels are obsolete.
It's not like they don't roll anymore...
But, yeah- that BCD isn't so much of a spec standard these days.
That being said, the Stronglight 99, some versions of the SR Apex and the SR Custom came in those sizes.

My '84 Schwinn Letour Luxe came from the factory with a Sakae (SR) Super Custom 86mm BCD triple. All three rings (50-42-28) are attached using the same extended crank bolts. Pedals are obviously non-original.

Interestingly the '83 LeTour Luxe (not shown) came fitted with a Sugino 110/74 BCD double.
