Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

But then yall gotta understand, this is my first year of being an avid cyclist. I did okay on calorie and water intake and definitely though I could do it. I guess the biggest mistake was pulling an all-nighter and then riding almost 40-miles before a good break. On my break, I refilled myself and went over what I did wrong, got a little rest, and was able to make light of the final 10. A really interesting experience. The hills did kill me pretty badly as well but what do you expect from Arkansas. I'm gonna be better prepared next time. Thank you everyone so much for your advice.

My Technium(440)(Raleigh) definitely held up great with those 27-1/4 inch wheels. I've put that bike through so many rough roads and miles yet it still holds up great.

I guess that's a good summary of the day.
Keep riding, and keep having fun. You'll get there.

Good training ride for a century later this year.

Yes, sleep is very important ... and at your current level, next time I'd recommend riding 25 miles then taking a break, then 25 miles, break, etc.

As for the route, getting lost, etc., you were doing a solo century ... you could choose to go anywhere you wanted to go. There is no getting lost on a solo century.

As for meeting other cyclists, have a look at this website: https://www.cyclingarkansas.com/

The site for joining a cycling club here in Arkansas won't workout for me. Most clubs require 18 or older and I'm only 16 and my mom works full-time.

Keep at it! You'll get there.

I have a hard time riding solo for long distances, so maybe see if you can find a riding buddy. Makes it a lot easier.

If you knocked out 50 today, just shoot for a bit farther next time.

I have to admit, after I did mine on Monday, I was saying I never wanted to do another...right now I'm trying to figure out when it would be practical to do another. Legs feel good!

Endurance riding is as much about mental attitude as physical ability. Never allow negative thoughts. Think about what you will eat when you finish, or anything positive. Don't focus on the little aches and pains -- the more you do, the worse they become.

I did my first Century about 3-4 weeks ago and I even included 7,000+ft. of climbing. What I can recommend is making sure you get a good nights sleep(8-9 hours) and make sure you keep water filled up as well as a small amount of food. On my ride there was a section of 60 miles with about 80% of the climbing with no place to refill water or get any food. I forgot to refill before the climb and I made it through ok, but I really could have used more water.
