Hip Pain From Cycling? Ask for MRI? PT says not needed.

I was training for a tri last April/May. I was riding about 100 miles a week and loving it. I started to notice a pain in my right hip. Only on long rides and if I lay on my back with my right leg at 90 degrees up in the air, it hurts like hell when I lower it about a foot off the ground.

Laid off in the summer Sprinting on grass with cleats didn't feel 100% either. Went to doc recently who said it was fine . I then asked for an MRI, he said to see a PT first. I did that yesterday. PT said I certainly have less strength in my right leg, cant bring it to my chest as far as my left and my right butt cheek isnt as strong. She put me threw some stretches that hurt but also felt good. Less strength is weird because I deadlift often but I guess it's a different motion.

Anyway. Nothing diagnosed. Just gave me a theraband and some stretches to do. Said an MRI wasnt necessary.

Thoughts? Should I ask for an MRI? I'm paying for it in my no deductible high monthly plan.

Also, could bad fitted bike cause this?

If you had bone cancer in your hip? Would ask a bike mechanic to fix it for you?

Why do you want an MRI?

And you aren't paying for it. We are all paying for it. Lay off on the MRIs, man. I'm tapped out.

I'm full of pains and aches due to a recent motorcycle accident and a very heavy training regimen (for me). I've already done one MRI. My lawyer keeps telling me to go for another one but I am sick of going to 100 doctor appointments for nothing to be solved and just keep racking medical bills. If you want to ask for it go ahead. I am on the other side of the spectrum, companies call me to schedule MRIs and I hang up on them. Definitely makes me mad how easy it is to ask for stuff when the money isnt yours... now im mad.

I used to have hip pain and discovered my seat was 7cm too high, having ridden that way for years. Now that it is correct, no more problems.

Do what the PT says too it will likely help you become balanced again

DO what the therapist says and if things haven't improved in a couple of months revisit the issue.

IT band? Are you subconsciously pulling your hip out of joint when riding?

No clue. The pain is on the inside. Everything is connected so I suppose if my IT was weak and I was overcompensating, especially if fitted improperly. The PT didnt pinpoint a problem or give it a name, just stated things were weaker than my left and an overall area where and some exercises to help. It's possible it's not an actual 'condition' but more of a strain in the hip flexor or something.

I'm trying to swim more which helps. It's not all the time pain, just certain movements.

You must have a strong groin!

I know what you mean though, I overcompensate for injured muscles with other muscles injuring those others muscles in the process.. lame

We aren't paying for it. His insurance company is. He's paying them premiums.

That isn't how insurance works. Insurance companies make money, they don't give it away. All of us with insurance are paying for his MRI.

You'd prefer the OP pays his premiums and gets no services in return?
Whether or not an MRI is warranted is another story - I'm in no position to judge that.(MRI's are expensive.)

I would prefer no one get MRIs unless they need them. That way all of our premiums would go down. An MRI shouldn't be the first response to a sore hip.

What is your age? I've had those types of pain, a fit adjustment did the trick. Since hitting the ripe old age of 40, everything seems to want to come loose. Stretching, core training & proper fit are a neccesity. Not like it was at 30, definitely not like 20.

You may be right in the country where an MRI can cost you an arm and a leg. I had an MRI while in Japan about 10 years ago. I had no insurance, yet it cost me just a little over 200 US dollars.

Given the loss of strength in the leg, I suggest you see a neurologist to consider possible nerve impairment in the spinal column, especially if you can't seem to locate the exact location of the pain in the hip.

I have had back disk (L4-L5 )problems for over 40 years; and my back never hurt. Pain often manifested itself in the hip, or thigh and weakness in the leg, ankle or foot on one side.

I recently had MRI's of my back, as well as x-rays at the request of my neurosurgeon, and also of my kidney area at the request of my urologist.
Since I have both Medicare and Blue Cross/Blue Shield I didn't pay a dime for the procedures; except for the close to $6,000/yr I am paying for the insurance for my wife and myself.

This. Some time (maybe 2 years) ago I also had hip pain after a long ride. It hurt especially upon getting up in the morning. I posted here. Some said it sounded like bursitis. Maybe. Anyway, my saddle was way too high. After I lowered it a little, I no longer had the pain. (What I've learned: saddle too low is bad for the knees, too high is bad for hips.)

MRIs in Japan got cheap when the government set the maximum price they would pay (universal health care, ya know). Toshiba took that price point as a challenge and invented a low budget MRI machine for the Japanese market.

Me too. It turns out that the pinched nerve was in the muscles of my lower back. Not the crushed disk. The neurologist figured it out by send current through the nerves and measuring the signal through the nerves.
When it gets really bad he gives me "trigger point" muscle relaxing injections in the lower back, and it is much better for a while. I can't lift anything either. It was diagnosed wrong from day one by many doctors. Back surgery was recommended. I started missing work from this when I was 27. I'm 62 now. Wrong diagnosis all that time. ARGH!

Thanks for the info! Reminds me of Honda in the early 70s that produced the Civic with the CVCC technology to pass the Muskie Act.
