3.5 years and ~7K miles. Today I got shoestring tackled by a dog

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Maybe you could help the OP by training his problem dog. You could ride by and stay in front just long enough to tire the dog until it drops. A few instance like that and the dog learns.

Do you have any idea how many times I have done this? Fast and aggressive dogs are reluctant to chase chubby bald dudes all over Chicagoland as a result if my exploits. You are welcome!

Strangely, I got my first dog chase a couple of days ago. I was cycling along a local canal and cycled past an elderly couple with a west highland terrier. A few yards after I passed, I realised it was chasing me and barking. I didn't speed up (~12 mph) as I was interested how long it would persist. My thought process was that if went for me, I'd get a foot under it and gently launch it into the canal but i was more worried about it getting hurt by the spokes if it got too close to the bike.

It actually chased me for a good 100 yards which was impressive when you consider how short a westies legs are !

Change your route, carry dog spray (the brand Halt! is an excellent product) and leave the gun at home (hucking lead around a residential area, to prevent a dog attack, probably would land you in jail). I have used Halt! successfully on several different occasions, against a number of dogs, while I was living in Alabama.

I don't think road riding is for you.

Yup, bear sized pepper spray. Will have enough to include dog's owner of required.

I have done this, a couple of times, when I used to carry a pump under the top tube. The pump was "pressure" mounted, no straps to remove.

Not that hard and very effective on most dogs.
