Can I get away with no foot retention if I use brakes?

I just took delivery of my Kilo TT Stripper. I also bought a pair of Fyxation straps from Ben's. I have a small inventory of Wellgo BMX pedals that I use on all my bikes. This being said, the straps do not fit the BMX pedals, so I need to get pedals that are compatible. If I keep the Kilo FG and use both the factory brakes, can I still safely ride until my pedals arrive? I do have a freewheel I could steel from another bikes, but would rather not.

Unless you're going down some insane hills you will be fine. It's actually refreshing to ride fixed without foot retention, just take it easy

You can for sure, sometimes I ride my Surly without putting my clipless shoes on just to go to the store. You lose a lot of connection though in my opinion, the ride quality isn't as good. So to answer in short, yeah but try to get retention as soon as possible.

Okay, thanks. Just though that the bike did come with toe clips and straps. I could try those...

Fyxation straps are made specifically for BMX pedals.

Some plastic BMX pedals have cross bracing over the window where the straps go through. No clue why, I think Gusset were the ones I encountered like this, but they're probably just rebranded something else. I enjoy riding a big plastic bmx pedal on my bike now more than I ever did with a strap. I stick my feet on the down tube and coast down big hills. My feet never come off accidentally. I can still skip stop and skid (though I don't skid).

e: 1 front brake for me.

Now that it's mentioned, I ran across that with one pair of pedals I bought. Easy enough to cut them out - I seem to remember using a hacksaw blade.

Must confess, I'm on my second set of straps and don't like them any more than my first set. I'm going back to plastic toe clips and straps for my beater.

I greatly prefer my classic styled clips and straps. I know a lot of people sing the virtues of the Holdfast style straps, but they were awful for me. MKS medium clips and a set of decent leather singles is all I need.
